What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?

For Machinist B, write the straight-time rate separately from shift coverage and extra hours. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.

Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.

Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.

What should you know about two BLS releases?

Machinist B in the United States, annual wages, May 2024 and May 2025
Release period25thMedian75th
May 2024$46,250$56,150$64,910
May 2025$47,570$58,750$67,700

These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.

What should you know about supervisory and worker occupations?

BLS publishes these as separate occupations. Pay for one is not a pay step for the other.

Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.

What should you know about a move that can hold up?

Someone working in machinists working within comparable machining and setup requirements needs a clear reason to leave. If the answer depends on authority over the machining work and setup limits in your plant's B-grade position that you cannot offer, that mismatch belongs in the conversation before an offer.

What should you know about questions?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

What is the median pay for a Machinist B?

The median annual wage for Machinists in the United States was $58,750 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $47,570 and $67,700. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.

What does the 10th percentile mean here?

10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $39,200. 90% earned less than $80,010.

Does this include overtime or bonuses?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

Is this the pay for a Machinist B at a plant?

Machinist B is shown within the broader published occupation. BLS does not separate this plant-specific title, seniority, shift, process or credential. Compare the duties with the SOC definition before using the range. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.

How many people work in this occupation?

BLS estimated 287,050 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?

Machinist B roles are analyzed here within the context of the broad Machinists occupational category, SOC 51-4041. The national median for this occupation is $58,750 as of May 2025, with a $2,600 increase from the previous May 2024 data. A middle-band width of $20,130 characterizes the primary pay range for these workers.

These figures exclude non-monetary benefits and are intended to provide a general market perspective.

The BLS does not distinguish between plant-specific seniority levels like Machinist B. Industry-wide data for Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing reflects a median of $108,490, while Beverage and Tobacco Product Manufacturing reports $88,750. These national figures for the industry do not provide a direct wage guide for individual plant roles. Hiring managers should avoid relying solely on these metrics. Instead, define Machinist B requirements by the technical autonomy allowed within your facility, rather than assuming industry-wide standard definitions for this grade.

Comparative metro data demonstrates regional variance. Chicago-Naperville-Elgin reports a median of $59,520 and a middle-band width of $20,490. Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington reflects a median of $62,070 with a $24,440 middle-band width. Both regions maintain high concentrations of machining roles, as indicated by their location quotients. These metros are selected for their significant employment numbers in this occupation. Remember that these figures remain occupational averages. When hiring, you should align your compensation with your specific internal authorization and responsibility levels for a B-grade role, ensuring that the offer accounts for the local labor market conditions.

Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?

Why is my internal Machinist B definition not reflected in the SOC data?

The SOC 51-4041 category covers all machinists and does not subdivide based on letter grades or internal plant seniority. You must assess candidates using your own internal criteria for skill and responsibility.

How do the middle-band widths assist in recruitment?

The middle-band width helps you understand the variance between the 25th and 75th percentiles of pay. This shows how broad the spectrum of machinist compensation actually is for the general population.

Should industry-specific data dictate my Machinist B compensation?

No, industry-specific medians are national figures covering a variety of machinist roles within that sector. Use them for general awareness but base your compensation on your local market and specific job requirements.
