What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?
For Machinist C, write the straight-time rate separately from shift coverage and extra hours. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.
Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.
Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.
What should you know about two BLS releases?
| Release period | 25th | Median | 75th |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 2024 | $46,250 | $56,150 | $64,910 |
| May 2025 | $47,570 | $58,750 | $67,700 |
These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.
What should you know about supervisory and worker occupations?
BLS publishes these as separate occupations. Pay for one is not a pay step for the other.
- Supervisor occupation: Production Supervisor pay (SOC 51-1011)
Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.
What should you know about the actual remit?
Write down who is accountable for the machining tasks and supervision defined for your C-grade position today. That explanation helps separate their capability from a team's success at the machining tasks and supervision defined for your C-grade position.
What should you know about questions?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
What is the median pay for a Machinist C?
The median annual wage for Machinists in the United States was $58,750 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $47,570 and $67,700. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.
What does the 10th percentile mean here?
10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $39,200. 90% earned less than $80,010.
Does this include overtime or bonuses?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
Is this the pay for a Machinist C at a plant?
Machinist C is shown within the broader published occupation. BLS does not separate this plant-specific title, seniority, shift, process or credential. Compare the duties with the SOC definition before using the range. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.
How many people work in this occupation?
BLS estimated 287,050 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.
What should you know about related?
What does this data mean for your opening?
Manufacturing Headhunters evaluates Machinist C positions under the overarching SOC 51-4041 Machinists occupation. The current national median is $58,750, having grown by $2,600 since May 2024. The middle-band width of $20,130 defines the core pay spectrum for this occupation. Please note these amounts do not reflect fringe benefits, shift differentials, or other forms of indirect compensation.
Occupational grouping from the BLS is broad and does not categorize roles as C-grade or entry-level. While national industry medians are available, such as $108,490 for Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing and $88,750 for Beverage and Tobacco Product Manufacturing, they represent national averages for all machining roles in those sectors. They are not direct proxies for a Machinist C role. When screening, focus on the candidate's actual print and inspection capabilities rather than assumed C-grade definitions, which vary widely between plants.
Regional variations are evident in the comparison metros. The Chicago-Naperville-Elgin area shows a median of $59,520 and a middle-band width of $20,490. Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington features a median of $62,070 with a wider middle-band width of $24,440. These metros are highlighted due to their substantial machining workforce. High location quotients in these regions confirm deep occupational roots but do not dictate wage levels for entry-level tasks. Managers should use these benchmarks as guidance but adjust offers to match the specific training, supervision, and production needs of their shop, ensuring the candidate's skills are verified via a practical inspection exercise.
Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?
How should I interpret the Machinist C role given the broad SOC 51-4041 data?
The SOC category includes all skill levels. You must match your specific shop requirements to the candidate’s proven ability to perform tasks like print interpretation and inspection.
Does the $2,600 median change reflect an industry-wide pay standard?
This amount represents the change in the national median for the entire Machinists occupation compared to the previous year. It is a statistical movement in a broad group, not a specific raise for any one machinist grade.
Why use Minneapolis and Chicago as comparison metros?
These metros represent the largest concentrations of employment for this occupation according to the latest OEWS data. They provide a high-volume baseline for comparison.
