What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?

For Maintenance Technician C, write the straight-time rate separately from shift coverage and extra hours. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.

Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.

Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.

What should you know about two BLS releases?

Maintenance Technician C in the United States, annual wages, May 2024 and May 2025
Release period25thMedian75th
May 2024$52,710$63,760$78,070
May 2025$55,010$64,520$78,780

These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.

What should you know about supervisory and worker occupations?

BLS publishes these as separate occupations. Pay for one is not a pay step for the other.

Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.

What should you know about the actual remit?

Write down who is accountable for the maintenance tasks and support built into your C-grade position today. That explanation helps separate their capability from a team's success at the maintenance tasks and support built into your C-grade position.

What should you know about questions?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

What is the median pay for a Maintenance Technician C?

The median annual wage for Industrial Machinery Mechanics in the United States was $64,520 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $55,010 and $78,780. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.

What does the 10th percentile mean here?

10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $46,120. 90% earned less than $95,170.

Does this include overtime or bonuses?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Is this the pay for a Maintenance Technician C at a plant?

Maintenance Technician C is shown within the broader published occupation. BLS does not separate this plant-specific title, seniority, shift, process or credential. Compare the duties with the SOC definition before using the range. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.

What does this data mean for your opening?

Maintenance Technician C is categorized under the Industrial Machinery Mechanics SOC 49-9041. The national median wage for this group is $64,520, showing a 760 increase from the May 2024 report. The middle-band width is 23,770, with the 25th percentile at $55,010 and the 75th percentile at $78,780.

Since BLS does not track plant-specific titles or C-grade seniority, this guide relies on a maintenance exercise matched to authorized equipment tasks to provide relevant salary context.

In high-employment hubs, Houston-Pasadena-The Woodlands, TX, reports a median of $63,180, while Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, TX, reports a median of $63,380. The Houston median showed no change, while Dallas moved 510 higher. Manufacturing Headhunters analyzes these figures to assist in understanding how local labor concentration influences competitive pay. Local fluctuations often stem from specific industry clusters that drive demand for mechanical maintenance skills within these respective regions.

The national manufacturing sector offers comparative industry benchmarks, such as $94,200 in Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing, NAICS 324000 and 324100. Aerospace Product and Parts Manufacturing, NAICS 336400, shows a median of $83,790. These figures are national in scope and separate from the local, broader occupation averages. Remember that BLS data excludes total compensation benefits like shift differentials, insurance, and retirement contributions, which frequently constitute significant parts of an offer in the manufacturing sector.

This analysis assumes no estimation for unavailable data. The middle-band width of 23,770 serves as a reliable marker for understanding how much pay variation exists for standard industrial mechanics. Location quotient reflects the geographic concentration of employment, which is helpful for assessing hiring intensity. Always ensure that the C-grade technician's capabilities match your internal requirements, as BLS data does not capture specialized technical qualifications. The assessment must focus on the actual equipment duties performed rather than general job titles.

Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?

What is the significance of the middle-band width in this data?

The 23,770 middle-band width represents the difference between the 25th and 75th percentile. It helps set a salary expectation by identifying the range where most technicians are paid.

How can I use the Petroleum industry median if my plant is in a different sector?

The Petroleum industry median serves as an industry-specific reference point for high-complexity maintenance. It is a useful benchmark for comparing your compensation against industry leaders even if your plant sector is different.

Does the screening process define the C-grade technician?

Our screening focuses on specific authorized maintenance tasks and training records. It ensures that the candidate's actual competency matches the C-grade level as defined by your specific equipment requirements.
