What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?

For Press Brake Operator, write the straight-time rate separately from shift coverage and extra hours. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.

Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.

Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.

What should you know about two BLS releases?

Press Brake Operator in the United States, annual wages, May 2024 and May 2025
Release period25thMedian75th
May 2024$38,400$45,590$52,150
May 2025$38,870$46,330$55,410

These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.

What should you know about supervisory and worker occupations?

BLS publishes these as separate occupations. Pay for one is not a pay step for the other.

Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.

What should you know about material range?

Mild steel, stainless and aluminum bend differently. Thick plate needs different tonnage and care. We ask what range the candidate handled and how they adjusted. A person with only thin sheet may not suit heavy plate.

What should you know about questions?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

What is the median pay for a Press Brake Operator?

The median annual wage for Cutting, Punching, and Press Machine Setters, Operators, and Tenders, Metal and Plastic in the United States was $46,330 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $38,870 and $55,410. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.

What does the 10th percentile mean here?

10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $35,760. 90% earned less than $65,510.

Does this include overtime or bonuses?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

Is this the pay for a Press Brake Operator at a plant?

The Press Brake Operator title maps to the published occupation. BLS does not separate this process, credential, shift or plant-specific title from other work in the occupation. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.

How many people work in this occupation?

BLS estimated 171,200 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?

Press Brake Operators are essential for forming sheet metal components in various manufacturing settings. This job is part of the SOC 51-4031 group. The national median salary reached $46,330 in May 2025, up $740 from the $45,590 reported in May 2024. Manufacturing Headhunters observes that these figures do not incorporate additional pay for advanced CNC programming tasks or shift-based premiums.

Regional data reveals different pay structures in major manufacturing metros. The Detroit-Warren-Dearborn area reports a median of $50,460 with a location quotient of 5.56, reflecting a heavy industrial presence. These figures reflect the local labor market conditions. The BLS occupational grouping is broad and includes various machine setups, so these averages cover many levels of machine complexity.

National industry medians are provided for sector benchmarking. Motor Vehicle Manufacturing shows a national median of $66,280. Computer and Peripheral Equipment Manufacturing reports $56,220. Ship and Boat Building stands at $51,840. These figures are for the national sector as a whole, not local metro averages. These industry rows clarify the higher compensation potential in certain sectors, but they do not account for differences in individual machine capabilities. The BLS data remains the baseline for these broad occupational categories.

Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?

What does the middle band width represent?

The middle band width of $16,540 represents the earnings gap between the 25th and 75th percentiles. It defines the range for the middle half of the workforce.

Is there a difference in duties for this occupation?

The occupation code covers many roles, from simple press operation to advanced CNC brake programming. Plant duties often differ significantly despite the shared code.

What is excluded from the BLS wage figures?

The BLS figures are limited to base wages. They exclude overtime pay, performance bonuses, and other forms of non-cash compensation.
