What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?

For Production Welder (MIG), write the straight-time rate separately from shift coverage and extra hours. OEWS measures straight-time gross wages, not pure base salary or total compensation. It includes base rate, guaranteed pay, commissions and production bonuses. It excludes overtime, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses and benefits.

An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure. Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.

Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.

What should you know about two BLS releases?

Production Welder (MIG) in the United States, annual wages, May 2024 and May 2025
Release period25thMedian75th
May 2024$45,580$51,000$61,610
May 2025$46,790$53,750$63,010

These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.

What should you know about supervisory and worker occupations?

BLS publishes these as separate occupations. Pay for one is not a pay step for the other.

Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.

What should you know about red flags and screening for fit?

Watch for welders who cannot name the wire or gas they use, or who blame every defect on the machine. We also check shift, commute and relocation honestly, and ask what the candidate earns now. Welding talent is often tied to a local area, so travel burden matters as much as skill.

What should you know about questions?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

What is the median pay for a Production Welder (MIG)?

The median annual wage for Welders, Cutters, Solderers, and Brazers in the United States was $53,750 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $46,790 and $63,010.

What does the 10th percentile mean here?

10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $39,240. 90% earned less than $77,530.

Does this include overtime or bonuses?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

Is this the pay for a Production Welder (MIG) at a plant?

Production Welder (MIG) is shown within the broader published occupation. BLS does not separate this plant-specific title, seniority, shift, process or credential. Compare the duties with the SOC definition before using the range. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.

How many people work in this occupation?

BLS estimated 416,210 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?

Production Welders focusing on MIG processes play a central role in manufacturing operations. These professionals are grouped under the BLS occupation for Welders, Cutters, Solderers, and Brazers. The national median salary is $53,750 as of May 2025. For Production Welder (MIG) in the United States, releases are separate survey estimates.

The May 2025 median is $53,750; the May 2024 median is $51,000. Their arithmetic difference is $2,750. They are not the same workers' raises and do not establish a pay trend or its cause. For Production Welder (MIG) in the United States, percentiles describe the wage distribution of the mapped occupation. The published middle interval is $46,790 to $63,010 annually. They do not assign pay to plant size, seniority, credentials or job complexity. Assess duties and candidate requirements separately; these rows do not measure a premium for them. For Production Welder (MIG) in the United States, OEWS measures straight-time gross wages, not pure base salary or total compensation. Commissions and production bonuses are included; overtime, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses and benefits are excluded.

Regional employment concentration varies significantly. Houston-Pasadena-The Woodlands reports a median salary of $57,940 with a location quotient of 1.8. The Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metro shows a median of $51,630 and a lower location quotient of 0.98. The differences between these areas are dictated by local supply and demand factors for welders. The BLS data aggregates all welding roles, so these figures include various levels of certification and task complexity.

Industry-specific wages offer insight into sector demand. The Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing sector reports a national median of $99,570. Chemical Manufacturing holds a national median of $76,240. These specific industry medians are much higher than the general occupational median. They demonstrate that welding tasks in high-hazard or complex process plants command higher wages. Note that these are national industry rows and should not be used as direct benchmarks for local market job offers. The BLS excludes non-cash compensation from all of these figures.

Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?

For Production Welder (MIG) in the United States, releases are separate survey estimates. The May 2025 median is $53,750; the May 2024 median is $51,000. Their arithmetic difference is $2,750. They are not the same workers' raises and do not establish a pay trend or its cause.

Why is the Petroleum industry pay higher than the general welding median?

Petroleum industries often require specialized credentials and operate in complex, high-risk environments. This demand drives higher wages compared to general production welding.

Is the median change an arithmetic calculation?

For Production Welder (MIG) in the United States, releases are separate survey estimates. The May 2025 median is $53,750; the May 2024 median is $51,000. Their arithmetic difference is $2,750. They are not the same workers' raises and do not establish a pay trend or its cause.

Can I use these figures to estimate local job offers?

These figures provide a reference for broader labor markets. They do not account for individual employer compensation strategies or non-cash perks.
