What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?

For TIG Welder, write the straight-time rate separately from shift coverage and extra hours. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.

Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.

Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.

What should you know about two BLS releases?

TIG Welder in the United States, annual wages, May 2024 and May 2025
Release period25thMedian75th
May 2024$45,580$51,000$61,610
May 2025$46,790$53,750$63,010

These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.

What should you know about supervisory and worker occupations?

BLS publishes these as separate occupations. Pay for one is not a pay step for the other.

Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.

What should you know about prep, cleanliness and tungsten habits?

TIG quality starts before the arc. We ask how the candidate cleans aluminum, prepares stainless edges and manages tungsten shape and contamination. Honest welders explain their habits with detail. Lazy prep shows up later as porosity and rework, so we listen for care.

What should you know about questions?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

What is the median pay for a TIG Welder?

The median annual wage for Welders, Cutters, Solderers, and Brazers in the United States was $53,750 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $46,790 and $63,010.

What does the 10th percentile mean here?

10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $39,240. 90% earned less than $77,530.

Does this include overtime or bonuses?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

Is this the pay for a TIG Welder at a plant?

The TIG Welder title maps to the published occupation. The duties align, but BLS combines employers and industries. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.

How many people work in this occupation?

BLS estimated 416,210 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?

TIG Welders perform high-precision work on stainless and aluminum components. These professionals fall under the broader BLS occupation title for Welders, Cutters, Solderers, and Brazers. The national median salary stands at $53,750. This reflects a gain from the previous year median of $51,000. The middle band width of $16,220 highlights the earnings variation within this occupation.

Manufacturing Headhunters advises that these figures are strictly base compensation and omit extra benefits or premiums.

The Houston-Pasadena-The Woodlands metro reports a median pay of $57,940 and a location quotient of 1.8. This indicates a high concentration of welding work relative to the total workforce. Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington presents a lower median of $51,630 with a location quotient of 0.98. These metro figures represent local market conditions. They confirm that geographic region is a significant driver of pay differences for welding machine operation.

Industry data at the national level shows wage variations by sector. Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing reports a national median of $99,570. Chemical Manufacturing shows a median of $76,240. These industries utilize TIG processes differently than general job shops, which may explain the higher median figures. These are national industry rows provided by the BLS. They should not be mistaken for local wage ranges for any single facility. The BLS data is comprehensive but lacks detail on individual welder certification levels.

Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?

Does this role have a separate BLS occupation code?

No, TIG Welders are included within the broader Welders, Cutters, Solderers, and Brazers category. The data provided covers the entire occupational group.

What is the location quotient?

The location quotient measures the concentration of an occupation in a specific area. It does not measure local pay levels or candidate supply.

How do these national industry medians compare to the occupational median?

The national industry medians are specific to those sectors and are generally higher. The occupational median represents all industries combined.
