What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?
For Receiving / Source Inspector, write the straight-time rate separately from shift coverage and extra hours. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.
Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.
Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.
What should you know about two BLS releases?
| Release period | 25th | Median | 75th |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 2024 | $38,740 | $47,460 | $59,970 |
| May 2025 | $39,890 | $48,570 | $61,440 |
These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.
What should you know about supervisory and worker occupations?
BLS publishes these as separate occupations. Pay for one is not a pay step for the other.
- Supervisor occupation: Production Supervisor pay (SOC 51-1011)
Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.
What should you know about a move that can hold up?
Someone working in inspectors checking purchased components at manufacturing sites and suppliers needs a clear reason to leave. Explain how your opening changes their responsibility for incoming or source inspection against supplier and drawing requirements. If the answer depends on authority over incoming or source inspection against supplier and drawing requirements that you cannot offer, that mismatch belongs in the conversation before an offer.
What should you know about questions?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
What is the median pay for a Receiving / Source Inspector?
The median annual wage for Inspectors, Testers, Sorters, Samplers, and Weighers in the United States was $48,570 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $39,890 and $61,440.
What does the 10th percentile mean here?
10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $35,510. 90% earned less than $77,860.
Does this include overtime or bonuses?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
Is this the pay for a Receiving / Source Inspector at a plant?
Receiving / Source Inspector is shown within the broader published occupation. BLS does not separate this plant-specific title, seniority, shift, process or credential. Compare the duties with the SOC definition before using the range. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.
How many people work in this occupation?
BLS estimated 597,370 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.
What should you know about related?
What does this data mean for your opening?
The Receiving / Source Inspector role is mapped to the Inspectors, Testers, Sorters, Samplers, and Weighers category. National employment is reported at 597370. The national median is $48570, marking a medianChange of 1110 from the previous $47460. The middleBandWidth of 21550 spans from a P25 of $39890 to a P75 of $61440.
Manufacturing Headhunters emphasizes that these figures do not include non-cash compensation, which is standard for inspection leadership positions. These BLS data points reflect the entire inspection profession rather than plant-specific receiving duties alone.
National industry comparisons provide context: Aerospace Product and Parts Manufacturing pays a median of $74450, Motor Vehicle Manufacturing pays $73310, and Ship and Boat Building pays $64560. These sector-specific medians are distinct from the general national role median. Regarding regional labor markets, the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin metro reports a median of $48230 with a location quotient of 1.33. The Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim metro reports a median of $51560 with a location quotient of 0.94. These differences reflect varying regional industrial concentrations.
The scope of the receiving role often involves handling nonconforming material without losing traceability. Since BLS does not partition this specific duty, the broader occupation figures must be used as a baseline. The P75 of $61440 and P90 of $77860 show that specialized source inspectors in complex industries likely trend toward the upper end of the spectrum. Hiring managers should avoid relying solely on the median of $48570, as it mixes entry-level staff with advanced inspectors who possess specific quality-program expertise. The middleBandWidth of 21550 highlights the significant pay variance based on technical seniority and specific quality certifications.
Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?
How does industry sector affect receiving inspector compensation?
National industry medians like the $74450 in Aerospace indicate that sectors with higher quality requirements typically pay inspectors more. These industry figures cover the entire broader inspector SOC category.
Are regional differences in the location quotient linked to pay rates?
No, the location quotient of 1.33 in Chicago simply measures employment density for inspectors in that area. It provides no direct correlation to specific hourly or annual pay amounts.
Does the provided median reflect my company's requirement for source inspection authority?
The median of $48570 is a national average for all inspectors. It does not account for the specific authority or technical skill required for source inspection and material identity control.
