What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?

For Semiconductor Equipment Technician, write the straight-time rate separately from shift coverage and extra hours. OEWS measures straight-time gross wages, not pure base salary or total compensation. It includes base rate, guaranteed pay, commissions and production bonuses. It excludes overtime, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses and benefits.

An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure. Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.

Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.

What should you know about two BLS releases?

Semiconductor Equipment Technician in the United States, annual wages, May 2024 and May 2025
Release period25thMedian75th
May 2024$56,750$71,300$85,160
May 2025$60,040$74,090$88,710

These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.

What should you know about supervisory and worker occupations?

BLS publishes these as separate occupations. Pay for one is not a pay step for the other.

Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.

What should you know about practical qualification?

We ask the candidate to describe a serious tool failure, from first alarm to return to production. They should mention checks, isolation, parts, verification and qualification wafers. The order and detail of the story show real ownership. We also ask what they learned.

What should you know about questions?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

What is the median pay for a Semiconductor Equipment Technician?

The median annual wage for Electrical and Electronics Repairers, Commercial and Industrial Equipment in the United States was $74,090 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $60,040 and $88,710. This is the closest proxy BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.

What does the 10th percentile mean here?

10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $46,840. 90% earned less than $105,590.

Does this include overtime or bonuses?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

Is this the pay for a Semiconductor Equipment Technician at a plant?

The Semiconductor Equipment Technician title maps to the published occupation. BLS does not separate this process, credential, shift or plant-specific title from other work in the occupation. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.

How many people work in this occupation?

BLS estimated 65,010 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?

The Semiconductor Equipment Technician role is measured under SOC 49-2094, a broad occupation covering Electrical and Electronics Repairers for commercial and industrial equipment. For Semiconductor Equipment Technician in the United States, releases are separate survey estimates. The May 2025 median is $74,090; the May 2024 median is $71,300. Their arithmetic difference is $2,790.

They are not the same workers' raises and do not establish a pay trend or its cause. The middle-band width is $28,670, spanning from $60,040 at the P25 to $88,710 at the P75. This significant spread highlights the diverse technical requirements of this occupation, ranging from routine maintenance to complex troubleshooting of vacuum, RF, and wafer robotics. Because this is a proxy mapping, the data encompasses various repair environments beyond semiconductor cleanrooms.

In terms of regional hiring hubs, Houston-Pasadena-The Woodlands reports a median of $77,880, while the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metro has a median of $73,530. The Houston metro maintains a high location quotient of 3.41, indicating a heavy concentration of industrial equipment repair activity, likely tied to regional petrochemical infrastructure. This differs from the Dallas market, where the technology sector exerts a different type of demand. Managers in these hubs should understand that these figures represent a broader occupational category, meaning the data includes repairers working on equipment completely unrelated to semiconductor manufacturing.

Industry-specific national data provides more context for high-value technical repair. Aerospace Product and Parts Manufacturing reports a median of $109,570, while Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing reports $105,590. These industries utilize the same SOC 49-2094 classification but clearly value specialized equipment maintenance at higher levels than the general median. Hiring managers at Semiconductor firms should be aware that the national manufacturing industry medians often exceed the general occupation median by a wide margin. These figures omit non-salary benefits and specialized tool experience like lithography or implant systems, which are critical for recruitment. The $28,670 middle-band width serves as a marker for the disparity between general maintenance and high-complexity tool repair in specialized manufacturing settings.

Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?

Why is the Houston median higher than the Dallas median?

The Houston median of $77,880 likely reflects the intense demand for high-level maintenance within the regional petrochemical and heavy industrial sectors. The Dallas median of $73,530 is closer to the national average of $74,090.

Does the SOC 49-2094 classification include all semiconductor equipment repair?

No, this SOC classification is a broad proxy that captures various commercial and industrial electronics repairers. It does not exclusively isolate semiconductor-specific cleanroom technician tasks.

What do the industry medians indicate for talent acquisition?

Managers should expect to compete with these sectors for top technical talent.
