What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?

For Supply Chain Manager, separate the guaranteed salary from any discretionary bonus or commission arrangement. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.

Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.

Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.

What should you know about two BLS releases?

May 2024$78,360$102,010$136,050
May 2025$82,440$107,230$146,770

These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.

What should you know about planning, buying and moving materials as one job?

We ask the candidate to describe a normal week. Who built the schedule, who released purchase orders, who booked inbound freight, and how many people sat under them? A person who only supported one function will describe tasks. A person who owned all three will describe trade offs, such as paying for expedited freight versus carrying another week of stock.

What should you know about questions?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

What is the median pay for a Supply Chain Manager?

The median annual wage for Transportation, Storage, and Distribution Managers in the United States was $107,230 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $82,440 and $146,770. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.

What does the 10th percentile mean here?

10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $65,120. 90% earned less than $194,900.

Does this include overtime or bonuses?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

Is this the pay for a Supply Chain Manager at a plant?

BLS measures this broader occupation across industries. It does not publish a separate wage for this manufacturing title. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.

How many people work in this occupation?

BLS estimated 221,180 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?

Supply Chain Managers are measured under the SOC 11-3071 Transportation, Storage, and Distribution Managers category, with a national median annual wage of $107,230. This figure reflects an increase of $5,220 from the May 2024 median of $102,010. The middle band width for this occupation is $64,330, indicating significant salary variation between the 25th and 75th percentiles.

Manufacturing Headhunters highlights that this broad dataset does not isolate plant-specific supply chain roles that involve both tactical planning and complex logistics.

Manufacturing industry-specific national benchmarks provide higher salary targets than the general national average. Engine, Turbine, and Power Transmission Equipment Manufacturing reports a median of $160,620. Semiconductor and Other Electronic Component Manufacturing holds a median of $148,380, and Motor Vehicle Manufacturing shows a median of $147,200. These sectors, which rely on heavy logistics and complex planning, consistently show pay levels well above the $107,230 national baseline.

Regional labor markets demonstrate the influence of high employment density. The New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ metro shows a median of $133,640 with a middle band width of $65,140. These regions represent the highest employment levels for this occupation category nationwide, which often correlates with market-driven wage premiums.

These BLS statistics exclude key manufacturing pay components such as inventory management bonuses, performance-related profit sharing, and certification pay. Total national employment for this occupational group is 221,180. The location quotient for the Los Angeles metro is 1.37, while New York reports 0.77. The provided data excludes non-cash benefits and is limited by its broad mapping of professional titles across disparate sectors and seniority levels.

Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?

What is the difference between the national median for this occupation and the median in semiconductor manufacturing?

The national median is $107,230, whereas semiconductor manufacturing reports a median of $148,380. This significant gap reflects the higher industry-specific demand for supply chain management expertise in high-tech manufacturing.

What was the growth in the national median salary from May 2024 to May 2025?

The median for this occupational category grew by $5,220, increasing from $102,010 in May 2024 to $107,230 in May 2025.

What does the location quotient of 1.37 for Los Angeles indicate?

The location quotient of 1.37 shows that the Los Angeles metro area has a higher concentration of jobs in this category than the national average. It confirms the area as a major logistics hub but does not dictate a specific local pay rate.
