What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?
For VP of Supply Chain / Director of Supply Chain, separate the guaranteed salary from any discretionary bonus or commission arrangement. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.
An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure. Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.
Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.
What should you know about two BLS releases?
| Release period | 25th | Median | 75th |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 2024 | $78,360 | $102,010 | $136,050 |
| May 2025 | $82,440 | $107,230 | $146,770 |
These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.

What should you know about responsibilities behind the title?
The strongest fit has run the full loop from forecast to shipment in a plant with real changeover cost, long lead components and customers who fine for late delivery. A distribution executive can be excellent and still lack feel for routings, bills of material and capacity limits.
A director from a high volume repetitive plant may struggle in a job shop with variable orders. Title match matters less than whether the candidate has made trade offs between inventory, service and cost, and defended them to a controller and a sales vice president.
What should you know about questions?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $65,120. 90% earned less than $194,900.
Does this include overtime or bonuses?

What does this data mean for your opening?
The VP and Director of Supply Chain roles are measured under the broader SOC 11-3071 Transportation, Storage, and Distribution Managers category. This category reports a national median annual wage of $107,230, which is an increase of $5,220 from the previous May 2024 median of $102,010.
Manufacturing Headhunters emphasizes that this data is aggregated and does not account for the specific seniority, supply chain complexity, or global network management typical of director or VP roles.
Industry-specific manufacturing data indicates higher pay benchmarks for these leadership titles. Engine, Turbine, and Power Transmission Equipment Manufacturing reports a median of $160,620. Semiconductor and Other Electronic Component Manufacturing shows a median of $148,380. Motor Vehicle Manufacturing reports $147,200. These figures, representing national sector averages, demonstrate that these manufacturing industries consistently exceed the aggregate national median for transportation and storage managers.
Metropolitan labor markets with the highest employment concentrations for this occupation provide a different perspective. The New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ metro shows a median of $133,640 with a middle band width of $65,140. These metros are current hubs for high-level supply chain employment, often with localized market premiums.
It is essential to recognize that BLS data excludes executive-level incentives such as stock options, performance bonuses, and long-term retention grants. Total national employment for this occupational code is 221,180. The location quotient for the Los Angeles area is 1.37, while the New York area is 0.77. The provided data represents current national employment, but applicants for director or VP positions often seek compensation packages beyond the broad BLS median.
Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?
Does the national median of $107,230 represent director or VP-level compensation?
The national median reflects a broad occupational group, not specifically director or VP titles. Manufacturing Headhunters notes that compensation for these executive roles typically exceeds the broader median reported for transportation and storage managers.
How much has the median changed for this occupation since May 2024?
The national median increased by $5,220 over the past year, moving from $102,010 to $107,230.
Why is the middle band width for the Los Angeles metro area higher than the national band?
The Los Angeles middle band width is $85,160, compared to the national band of $64,330. This suggests a higher level of variability in salary for the middle 50 percent of the labor market in Los Angeles.
