What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?
For Supplier Development Engineer, separate the guaranteed salary from any discretionary bonus or commission arrangement. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.
Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.
Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.
What should you know about two BLS releases?
| Release period | 25th | Median | 75th |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 2024 | $81,910 | $101,140 | $127,480 |
| May 2025 | $83,600 | $102,440 | $129,250 |
These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.
Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.
What should you know about pPAP and launch support?
Many candidates have reviewed PPAP packages. We ask whether they helped a supplier build one, what they did when a capability study failed, and how they handled a tooling problem close to launch. We want people who understand the elements deeply enough to coach, not only approve or reject.
What should you know about questions?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
What is the median pay for a Supplier Development Engineer?
The median annual wage for Industrial Engineers in the United States was $102,440 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $83,600 and $129,250. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.
What does the 10th percentile mean here?
10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $74,370. 90% earned less than $159,860.
Does this include overtime or bonuses?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
Is this the pay for a Supplier Development Engineer at a plant?
BLS measures this broader occupation across industries. It does not publish a separate wage for this manufacturing title. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.
How many people work in this occupation?
BLS estimated 365,740 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?
Supplier Development Engineering is analyzed within the broader SOC 17-2112 Industrial Engineers category. This mapping is broad, and Manufacturing Headhunters notes that actual plant duties, such as PPAP, quality improvement programs, and lean manufacturing initiatives, necessitate a more targeted analysis of the provided data.
National industry benchmarks show higher figures in sectors like Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing at $127,140, which stands above the national median of $102,440. The middle-band width for this occupation is $45,650, representing the variance between the P25 of $83,600 and the P75 of $129,250.
Regional employment hubs provide context through their median data. The Detroit-Warren-Dearborn area reports a median of $104,110, while the Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington area is at $104,730. These figures are higher than the national median, illustrating how industrial clusters influence pay. The national median has risen by $1,300 from the May 2024 level of $101,140. It is vital to recognize that these figures represent base compensation. Many manufacturing employers include performance bonuses or relocation allowances which the BLS methodology does not capture in these records.
When hiring for supplier development, consider that location quotients like 3.87 in Detroit indicate high industry concentration, but these figures do not represent individual worker availability. The role itself demands a blend of engineering and supply chain management expertise not explicitly measured by the BLS. Because this SOC covers all industrial engineering functions, many of which lack the specific vendor-facing requirements of a supplier development role, firms must assess credentials and specific experience in quality systems rather than relying on the general occupational median. The wage records do not distinguish between those focusing on shop-floor industrial engineering and those traveling to external supplier sites.
Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?
Why is the median lower than the industry-specific wages?
The $102,440 national median covers all industrial engineering roles, while sectors like Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing at $127,140 reflect more specialized engineering requirements. The broader occupation includes many roles that may not share the same supplier-facing demands.
Do the location quotients correlate to pay levels?
No, location quotients measure the concentration of employment in a specific area, not local pay levels or candidate supply. Pay is driven by local market competition within that industry cluster.
How do prior and current median figures compare?
The national median increased to $102,440 from the previous $101,140 recorded in May 2024. This change reflects a $1,300 adjustment in the market rate for the broader industrial engineer classification.
