The hiring decision

What makes this hire work on your plant floor?

A supplier development engineer is the person you send to a supplier when parts keep failing, and the person your plant trusts to tell the truth about what they saw. If your supplier base is weak on process control, your incoming rejects are chronic, and your quality team spends its week writing letters, you need someone who can walk a supplier floor and leave it better. We search for engineers who have fixed suppliers, not just audited them.

We ask for a specific supplier, what was wrong, what the engineer saw on the floor, and what changed. We listen for tools used: process flow, control plans, mistake proofing, standard work and layered audits.

Many candidates have reviewed PPAP packages. We ask whether they helped a supplier build one, what they did when a capability study failed, and how they handled a tooling problem close to launch.

Before an introduction

What do we check before you interview?

We ask how they taught a supplier to change. Did they run a kaizen at the supplier plant, how did they gain trust, how did they deal with a family owned shop that resisted outside advice? Coaching ability separates a development engineer from an auditor.

  • Supplier selection and escalation

We ask how they decided whether a supplier could be saved or replaced. What data did they use, who did they bring into the decision, and how did they communicate it? We also ask about containment, controlled shipping and the point at which they recommended resourcing. A good answer includes the cost of leaving a weak supplier in place for one more program, and the cost to your plant of qualifying a replacement.

  • Travel and on site habits

This role travels. We ask how much, to which kinds of suppliers, and how they managed time away. We also ask about their approach on site: where they start, who they talk to, and how they leave findings so the supplier can act without them. Many start at receiving and the scrap bin, then follow the part backward. We also ask how they follow up remotely between visits, whether they use a simple action tracker, and how they respond when a supplier reports a fix that the next shipment contradicts.

Direct search

Where are qualified people working now?

We search supplier quality and development teams at automotive and aerospace OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers, where the discipline is formal and the suppliers are demanding. We also look at plant level quality and manufacturing engineers who regularly supported key suppliers and wanted a role centered on that work.

We pay attention to the commodity involved. Fixing a casting supplier and fixing an electronics assembler are different problems. A person comfortable in a foundry may be lost in a cleanroom assembly area, and a stamping expert may not read a solder defect. Language and culture matter too if your suppliers include shops where English is not the working language on the floor. We match on process type, supplier size, expected travel and the quality standards your suppliers must meet.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?

Fixing the supplier's process. Real development work involves reading a process, finding why it drifts and agreeing a fix with a supplier plant manager who may not want to hear it. PPAP and launch support. We want people who understand the elements deeply enough to coach, not only approve or reject.

The search

How the search runs?

You receive a short list of engineers interviewed on a real supplier case each. We coordinate interviews, suggest a supplier problem for candidates to react to, and gather references from supplier quality managers and plant leaders who watched them work.

  1. Agree the brief

We begin by finding out which suppliers cause the most pain, what failure modes recur and how your plant measures supplier performance.

  2. Approach relevant people

We agree our fee terms in writing, then determine the travel expectation, since that decides who will realistically take the role.

  3. Qualify the work and support the hire

What else affects this Supplier Development Engineer hire?

Yes: We evaluate by the supplier work done and the level of authority, not the title on the business card. Real development work involves reading a process, finding why it drifts and agreeing a fix with a supplier plant manager who may not want to hear it.

When is the fee due?

Only after a candidate we presented accepts the offer and begins work. Shortlists and interviews are free of charge.

Is our search confidential?

Yes: We describe your supply base by type and commodity until a candidate is engaged. Your supplier names stay private.

Can you find candidates who aren't looking?

Yes: Good supplier development engineers are busy traveling and rarely browse listings. We contact them directly and explain the supply base and travel.

What about relocation?

Often the role can be based near an airport hub, so location is more flexible than for plant roles. We confirm early what you will support.

Do you consider SDE or supplier development manager titles?

Yes: We evaluate by the supplier work done and the level of authority, not the title on the business card. Real development work involves reading a process, finding why it drifts and agreeing a fix with a supplier plant manager who may not want to hear it.

The Six-Step Search

What do you get before interviewing?

  1. 1. Search Calibration

You get a hiring brief that separates the work, reporting authority and non-negotiable requirements. We agree what would make a candidate worth an interview before contacting anyone.

  2. 2. Market Mapping

You get a defined search pool, not a reposted vacancy. We identify the kinds of plants and teams where people already handle comparable equipment, processes and operating demands.

  3. 3. Professional Contact Intelligence

You get a way to reach working people directly. We check professional contact routes and approach candidates discreetly, without making your plant or vacancy public unless you approve.

  4. 4. Persistent Personalized Outreach

You get individual conversations about the actual opening. We explain the work, shift and location, ask whether a move makes sense, and follow up without pretending every person is interested.

  5. 5. Live Candidate Qualification

You get evidence of fit before spending interview time. We talk through decisions, equipment, results and reasons for moving, then distinguish direct experience from skills that would need support.

  6. 6. Candidate Intelligence and Process Support

You get a focused short list with the information behind it. We explain motivation, practical constraints and concerns, support interviews, and keep offer decisions with your hiring team.

What should we discuss first?

What is your fee?

A percentage of the first year base salary, agreed in writing before the search starts. No charge unless you hire.

What should you know before sending supplier development engineer?

When do you pay a recruiting fee?

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. The signed recruiting agreement sets the fee basis and payment terms. Sending an opening does not itself commit you to a fee or an exclusive arrangement.

How long does it take to see a short list?

We discuss the search conditions before describing a realistic next step. Shift, location, equipment match and the candidate's reasons for moving all matter. We do not promise a shortlist date before understanding the opening.

How do you handle counteroffers?

We ask what is driving the move before introducing a candidate. We discuss what might change if the current employer offers more money or a different job. Your team still decides whether that person's motivation fits the opening.

What replacement terms apply?

We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.

What do you not do?

We do not bill hourly for a standard permanent search, repost a job-board ad as a search, or supply high-volume general labor. Retainers are not the default. Any different arrangement must be agreed in writing.
