What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?
For Commodity Manager, separate the guaranteed salary from any discretionary bonus or commission arrangement. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.
Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.
Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.
What should you know about two BLS releases?
| Release period | 25th | Median | 75th |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 2024 | $107,430 | $139,510 | $175,460 |
| May 2025 | $115,550 | $148,080 | $182,270 |
These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.
Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.
What should you know about the authority you are offering?
Settle category ownership rather than purchasing everything the plant consumes before outreach begins. We put the difference around category ownership rather than purchasing everything the plant consumes in front of you so the interview tests missing experience rather than assuming it is already there.
What should you know about questions?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
What is the median pay for a Commodity Manager?

What does the 10th percentile mean here?
10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $92,490. 90% earned less than $223,280.
Does this include overtime or bonuses?

Is this the pay for a Commodity Manager at a plant?
BLS measures this broader occupation across industries. It does not publish a separate wage for this manufacturing title. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.
How many people work in this occupation?
BLS estimated 84,320 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?
Commodity Managers operate under the SOC 11-3061 Purchasing Managers classification, a broad group defined by the BLS. The national median salary for this group is $148,080, which marks an $8,570 rise from May 2024. Because BLS data is generic, it does not identify commodity-specific or direct-material experience.
These figures exclude executive perks, annual bonus targets, and equity, which are typically part of a total rewards package for this role. Screening demonstrates that candidates must possess the ability to ground procurement decisions in the supply structure of a specific category.
The national middle band width is $66,720 between the P25 and P75 points. When examining high-employment hubs, New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ, reports a median of $171,810, while Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV, lists $172,150. These metros maintain location quotients of 1.43 and 2.46, signifying significant occupational density. Managers must remember that location quotients reflect where professionals are employed, not the local availability of candidates or the localized pay floors for commodity management in manufacturing specifically.
Manufacturing Headhunters points to industry-specific national wages for comparative analysis. Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing reports a national median of $171,000, while Engine, Turbine, and Power Transmission Equipment Manufacturing shows $171,300. Computer and Peripheral Equipment Manufacturing sits at $178,520. These industry rows provide a clear look at how capital-intensive sectors value purchasing leadership. The BLS does not differentiate by seniority or the level of independence a manager holds. Users of this guide must compare the duty of category ownership against the provided SOC definitions when establishing a hiring range.
Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?
How does category management fit into the purchasing SOC?
Category management is performed within the broader Purchasing Managers (SOC 11-3061) category. Because the BLS does not break out commodity-specific roles, managers should reference the upper half of the pay band for specialized talent.
What is the limitation of the national industry data?
The industry medians are strictly national and do not account for the geographic location of the plant. They demonstrate how specific industries value purchasing talent on a broader basis.
Why has the median increased by $8,570?
The median change represents the shift in the aggregate purchasing management occupation as reported by the BLS. It reflects broad labor market adjustments rather than a specific revaluation of commodity management roles.
