What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?

For Procurement Manager, separate the guaranteed salary from any discretionary bonus or commission arrangement. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.

Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.

Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.

May 2024$107,430$139,510$175,460
May 2025$115,550$148,080$182,270

These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.

Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.

Why fit is difficult?

Procurement in manufacturing splits into direct material that goes into the product and indirect spend that keeps the plant running. Employers often write one job description for both and then wonder why interviews go badly. A strong direct buyer understands resin grades, castings, bar stock or electronic components, qualification of suppliers and what a late shipment does to the schedule.

Indirect specialists negotiate services, maintenance supplies and capital equipment. The hard part is finding someone who can negotiate hard without damaging a supplier the plant cannot replace quickly.

What should you know about questions?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

What is the median pay for a Procurement Manager?

What does the 10th percentile mean here?

10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $92,490. 90% earned less than $223,280.

Does this include overtime or bonuses?

What does this data mean for your opening?

Procurement Managers are mapped to SOC 11-3061, Purchasing Managers. The national median annual wage is $148,080, which rose by $8,570 from the prior year's $139,510. This occupation has a broad middle-band width of $66,720. Manufacturing Headhunters notes that industrial premiums are high, with Computer and Peripheral Equipment Manufacturing at $178,520 and Engine and Turbine Manufacturing at $171,300.

Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing also commands a high median of $171,000. These BLS figures exclude executive-level perks, bonuses, or long-term incentives which often make up a significant portion of a purchasing manager's total earnings.

Regional data reveals intense competition in high-employment hubs. The New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ area reports a median of $171,810, and the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV area reports $172,150. These are significantly higher than the national median, indicating the premium placed on procurement talent in these high-cost, high-volume regions. Despite the median in New York experiencing a slight cooling of -1,270, the pay remains among the highest in the country, emphasizing the value of strategic sourcing and supply chain leadership in major corporate centers.

Recruiters need to account for the broad scope of the SOC. It groups together procurement leaders in consumer goods, government services, and critical infrastructure manufacturing. The wide middle-band width underscores that seniority, category scope, and savings-validation expertise all drive compensation variances. Hiring managers looking for leaders with extensive category knowledge should plan for the upper P75 ranges. The high location quotients in these hubs mean there is a large candidate pool, but securing the top 10% of those managers for complex manufacturing supply chains requires a focus on the premium compensation levels identified in high-wage manufacturing industries.

Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?

Why did the median in New York see a negative change while the national average rose?

This may reflect a change in the composition of the workforce, such as an increase in less-senior purchasing managers entering the local market. It does not mean senior-level wages are trending downward.

Are these medians inclusive of the large bonuses often tied to procurement results?

No, BLS annual wage figures exclude non-wage incentives like annual performance bonuses. Your offer should likely include these components to reach the total target compensation for a Procurement Manager.

How do I account for the wide middle-band width when setting base pay?

Use the P75 to P90 percentiles to identify the pay level for senior procurement leaders. The middle-band width is a warning that an average salary might only attract mid-level or less-complex managers.
