What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?
For Production Superintendent, separate the guaranteed salary from any discretionary bonus or commission arrangement. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.
Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.
Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.
What should you know about two BLS releases?
| Release period | 25th | Median | 75th |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 2024 | $94,620 | $121,440 | $156,330 |
| May 2025 | $98,160 | $126,060 | $161,880 |
These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.

What should you know about a move that can hold up?
Someone working in superintendents who coordinate multiple production departments needs a clear reason to leave. Explain how your opening changes their responsibility for several departments' daily output and supervisor coverage. If the answer depends on authority over several departments' daily output and supervisor coverage that you cannot offer, that mismatch belongs in the conversation before an offer.
What should you know about questions?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
What is the median pay for a Production Superintendent?

What does this data mean for your opening?
Manufacturing Headhunters analyzes the Production Superintendent role through the Industrial Production Managers SOC category. The national median for this role is $126,060 as of May 2025, an increase from $121,440 in May 2024. High-tier industrial sectors show stronger national medians, specifically $155,730 in Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing and $145,280 in Iron and Steel Mills.
These figures highlight the specialized demand for plant-floor technical management. The broader SOC covers a range of manufacturing roles, so these values act as reliable benchmarks for the specific responsibilities of a superintendent.
The national P25 to P75 middle-band width is $63,720, with a range from $98,160 to $161,880. Regional hub data reveals that the Los Angeles median is $128,540, while the Chicago median is $129,840. This narrow gap between national and key manufacturing hubs suggests high market standardization for operational floor leadership. These figures represent cash wages and exclude non-monetary benefits or additional production bonuses, which can shift total compensation higher depending on the specific manufacturing environment and performance targets set by the employer.
A Production Superintendent is defined by the ability to manage floor execution. This role involves recovering production schedules and balancing competing line constraints during a shift. The primary duty is ensuring that the production plan remains intact despite mechanical or staffing hurdles. This work is distinct from the high-level planning done by a Production Manager. BLS data serves as a comprehensive baseline for these duties, though specific compensation will vary based on the scale of the facility and the technical complexity of the production lines being managed at the plant level.
Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?
What is the national median change for this role compared to the prior year?
The national median increased from $121,440 in May 2024 to $126,060 in May 2025. This constitutes a total change of $4,620 over the one-year period.
How do the Chicago and Los Angeles medians compare to the national figure?
Both hubs reflect salaries slightly above the national median of $126,060, with Chicago at $129,840 and Los Angeles at $128,540. These differences align with the localized industrial demand within these specific high-concentration metros.
Does this data include performance bonuses or non-monetary benefits?
No, the reported figures are base cash wages and exclude performance bonuses or non-monetary benefits. These additional components can significantly influence the actual total compensation for superintendents.
