What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?

For Regional VP of Operations, separate the guaranteed salary from any discretionary bonus or commission arrangement. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.

Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.

Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.

What should you know about two BLS releases?

Release period25thMedian75th
May 2024$67,160$102,950$164,130
May 2025$72,320$105,770$167,280

These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.

Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.

What should you know about red flags we screen for?

We are wary of leaders who describe every plant as a problem they fixed, because regional work depends on respect for local strengths. Another warning sign is a candidate who cannot name the plant managers they developed, or who measures success only by a corporate scorecard. We also check whether a prior region shrank after they left.

What should you know about questions?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

What is the median pay for a Regional VP of Operations?

The median annual wage for General and Operations Managers in the United States was $105,770 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $72,320 and $167,280. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.

What does the 10th percentile mean here?

10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $50,090. 90% earned less than $253,390.

Does this include overtime or bonuses?

Is this the pay for a Regional VP of Operations at a plant?

BLS measures this broader occupation across industries. It does not publish a separate wage for this manufacturing title. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.

How many people work in this occupation?

BLS estimated 3,503,020 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?

The Regional VP of Operations is evaluated under the General and Operations Managers SOC definition, resulting in a national median of $105,770. This reflects a $2,820 rise from the previous May 2024 period. Because this role requires oversight of multiple facilities and remote leadership of plant managers, the broader occupational data often serves only as a starting point.

Hiring managers must look toward industry-specific national data, such as the $180,220 seen in Computer and Peripheral Equipment Manufacturing, to better understand the compensation market for high-level operational oversight. The middle band width of $94,960 acknowledges the high variability in regional leadership roles, particularly those requiring standardization across disparate plant cultures.

Looking at regional trends, New York-Newark-Jersey City shows a median of $157,000, while Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington reflects $111,010. These figures are calculated from the highest occupational employment volumes. Manufacturing Headhunters notes that while these numbers offer a structural reference, they exclude the significant travel requirements and complex KPI responsibilities inherent in a regional role. The data provided in this release is confined to the broader category, meaning it does not capture the specific pay premium often required for leaders capable of managing quality and safety across different building sites. When reviewing these stats, remember that the BLS does not measure the impact of specific experience in ERP rollouts or corporate-to-plant communication. Managers must assess their specific business requirements against these figures, acknowledging that the actual market pay may deviate based on the specific complexities of the role and the candidate's unique background.

Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?

How should I adjust these numbers for a regional role?

Since this role involves multi-site travel and strategy, expect that highly qualified candidates will trend toward the P75 or P90 percentiles. The broader median is likely to be too low for a regional leadership position.

Does the data account for the difficulty of leading plants remotely?

No, the BLS metrics are entirely quantitative regarding base salary. Qualitative skills like remote leadership and practice standardization are recognized through the higher percentiles, not through official survey documentation.

What is the primary value of the middle band width?

It quantifies the range of pay for general managers, showing that you must tailor your offer to the complexity of your specific regional footprint. Roles requiring more oversight demand pay on the higher side of this $94,960 band.
