What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?

For Chief Operating Officer (COO), separate the guaranteed salary from any discretionary bonus or commission arrangement. OEWS measures straight-time gross wages, not pure base salary or total compensation. It includes base rate, guaranteed pay, commissions and production bonuses. It excludes overtime, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses and benefits.

An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure. Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.

Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.

Why fit is difficult?

A COO search is as much about the CEO as the candidate. Roles fail when the CEO wants a deputy and the candidate wants a seat at the top. The pool is tiny, candidates are cautious, and the best ones usually have to be persuaded over several conversations.

What should you know about questions?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

What is the median pay for a Chief Operating Officer (COO)?

The median annual wage for Chief Executives in the United States was $213,990 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $129,540 and $356,200. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.

What does the 10th percentile mean here?

10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $75,700. 90% earned less than $507,730.

Does this include overtime or bonuses?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

Is this the pay for a Chief Operating Officer (COO) at a plant?

BLS measures this broader occupation across industries. It does not publish a separate wage for this manufacturing title. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.

How many people work in this occupation?

BLS estimated 204,350 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?

The Chief Operating Officer role within manufacturing relies on broad Chief Executive BLS reporting. For Chief Operating Officer (COO) in the United States, releases are separate survey estimates. The May 2025 median is $213,990; the May 2024 median is $206,420. Their arithmetic difference is $7,570.

They are not the same workers' raises and do not establish a pay trend or its cause. This figure is contrasted against sectoral national industry medians, such as $409,320 for Communications Equipment Manufacturing and $369,510 for Pharmaceutical and Medicine Manufacturing. For Chief Operating Officer (COO) in the United States, percentiles describe the wage distribution of the mapped occupation. The published middle interval is $129,540 to $356,200 annually. They do not assign pay to plant size, seniority, credentials or job complexity. Assess duties and candidate requirements separately; these rows do not measure a premium for them. The middle band width for this occupation is $226,660, demonstrating that the market compensates heavily for scope, scale, and specific turnaround or scaling experience rather than just role title.

Regional analysis reveals that compensation in Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim sits at a $234,290 median, while New York-Newark-Jersey City reports $301,440. These specific metros are the highest-density areas for this occupation. Candidates possessing experience with lean operating systems and footprint consolidation often fall on the higher end of the spectrum, though BLS does not measure these qualitative factors. Manufacturing Headhunters observes that hiring managers often face challenges when applying broad salary data to specific site or multi-site P&L responsibilities. BLS data excludes deferred compensation and equity which are standard for COOs. The role mapping assumes broad responsibilities, so managers should assess candidate history against corporate benchmarks rather than relying on hourly-derived approximations or internal estimations. The data presented here is based on the May 2025 release; figures are as stated without adjustments for individual performance or local economic conditions.

Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?

How do national industry rows help determine COO pay?

The national industry figures, such as $360,290 for Petroleum and Coal Products, highlight that high-complexity manufacturing often pays significantly above the general executive median. Use these rows to understand the potential ceiling in specific high-barrier sectors.

What is the primary limitation of using this broad occupation data for COOs?

The data is mapped to a broad Chief Executive SOC, which fails to account for specialized multi-site operational management duties. This creates a data gap that requires supplementary knowledge of industry-specific executive pay practices.

Do regional salary variations reflect availability?

Regional variations in New York or Los Angeles are driven by local market demand for executive talent within the broader SOC. These figures do not indicate the availability of candidates with specific lean or footprint consolidation experience.
