What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?

For Supply Planner, separate the guaranteed salary from any discretionary bonus or commission arrangement. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.

Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.

Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.

What should you know about two BLS releases?

Supply Planner in the United States, annual wages, May 2024 and May 2025
Release period25thMedian75th
May 2024$46,600$57,770$71,480
May 2025$47,820$59,650$75,000

These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.

Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.

What should you know about a move that can hold up?

Someone working in supply planners balancing manufacturing capacity and material supply needs a clear reason to leave. If the answer depends on authority over supply plans connecting inventory targets with constrained availability that you cannot offer, that mismatch belongs in the conversation before an offer.

What should you know about questions?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

What is the median pay for a Supply Planner?

The median annual wage for Production, Planning, and Expediting Clerks in the United States was $59,650 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $47,820 and $75,000. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.

What does the 10th percentile mean here?

10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $40,080. 90% earned less than $86,000.

Does this include overtime or bonuses?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

Is this the pay for a Supply Planner at a plant?

BLS measures this broader occupation across industries. It does not publish a separate wage for this manufacturing title. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.

How many people work in this occupation?

BLS estimated 390,160 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?

The Supply Planner role is mapped to the broader SOC 43-5061 classification of Production, Planning, and Expediting Clerks. The BLS aggregates these roles, which obscures the specific technical responsibilities of a supply planner. The national median salary is $59,650, which is an increase of $1,880 over the May 2024 figure.

These reports do not include variable incentives or bonuses, which are standard for manufacturing supply chain staff. The screening trial highlights that supply planners must be capable of identifying the precise root cause of an allocation issue, specifically when it involves supplier or capacity limitations.

The middle band width of $27,180 shows a relatively tight grouping of salary data, reflecting the clerical classification of the SOC. High-employment metros like New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ, and Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, CA, report medians of $63,130 and $61,810, respectively. Location quotients of 1.2 and 1.48 show a concentration of planning and expediting roles in these areas. Hiring managers should avoid misinterpreting these quotients as evidence of candidate availability; they simply show that the occupation is geographically concentrated in industrial hubs.

Manufacturing Headhunters utilizes industry-specific national rows to compare base pay across sectors. Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing provides a national median of $92,980, while Tobacco Manufacturing records $79,650. These are strictly national figures and do not include local variation. The BLS does not distinguish between a simple production expeditor and a supply planner who manages complex global allocations. Consequently, hiring managers should reference the upper percentiles and industry-specific medians to ensure they are benchmarking against professionals who handle actual supply chain constraints, not just clerical tasks.

Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?

Why is the median salary lower than expected for a supply planner?

The BLS aggregates all planning and expediting clerks into one SOC 43-5061 code. This broad category includes roles with much lower responsibility than a dedicated supply planner.

Are the industry-specific medians national?

Yes, all provided industry medians are national in scope. They illustrate how specific sectors value supply planning within their capital-intensive environments.

How should managers use the P75 to P90 range?

The P75 to P90 range is more relevant for supply planners than the aggregate median, as it accounts for roles with higher decision-making responsibilities within the SOC.
