The hiring decision
What makes this hire work on your plant floor?
A design quality engineer at a medical device company stands between a design team that wants to move and a regulator who wants proof. The role is judged by whether the design history file will hold up and whether risk management is real.
When you hire a Design Quality Engineer, you need someone who has worked within design controls, run ISO 14971 risk files and signed off verification and validation. We search for engineers who can explain what they challenged and why.
We ask the candidate to describe a device program under 21 CFR 820 and ISO 13485: design inputs, outputs, reviews, verification, validation, transfer and design changes. Strong engineers can tell us which review was contentious, which input was poorly written and how the design history file was kept current during development.
Many resumes mention risk management. A candidate who has maintained a risk file across a product's life explains it differently.
Before an introduction
What do we check before you interview?
Design quality must challenge without stalling the project. We ask how the candidate earned trust of R&D, how they pushed back on weak requirements and how they handled a disagreement about whether a test was adequate. Their examples show temperament as well as skill.
Verification and validation planning
We ask how the candidate drafted protocols, selected sample sizes, handled a failed test, wrote deviations and made the case that a design met user needs.

Design changes and post-market links
Once a product is on the market, design changes continue. We ask how the candidate managed change control, assessed regulatory impact and connected complaints and CAPAs back to design. Engineers who closed that loop understand the lifecycle.
Red flags we screen out early
Gaps in understanding user needs and use errors often reveal shallow experience. We also ask how the candidate handled a design review where the data was incomplete, because engineers who learn to say what the evidence does not yet show protect both the patient and the schedule far better than those who wait for an auditor to point it out.

Direct search
Where are qualified people working now?
Design quality engineers come from medical device manufacturers, especially those with active development programs, and from device contract manufacturers that provide design services. We also approach quality engineers in R&D groups, design assurance specialists at larger device companies and regulated product developers with similar controls.
We match the device class and technology. Implantable devices, diagnostic equipment, single-use disposables and software-driven devices carry different risk profiles. We prioritize candidates who have worked on products of comparable complexity and regulatory pathway to yours.
Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?
ISO 14971 risk management in practice. We ask who built the hazard analysis, how severity and probability scales were defined, how the team handled a risk that could not be reduced and how post-market feedback fed back into the file.

- Verification and validation planning. Engineers who reviewed protocols critically rather than only signing reports show real value.
- Red flags we screen out early. We watch for engineers who only formatted documents, who cannot describe a risk they challenged, who have only worked on minor changes to existing products, or who confuse verification with validation.
The search
How the search runs?
We then develop a candidate list from the pools above and approach engineers directly, including those who are in the middle of a submission. Candidates are screened on design controls, risk files and verification and validation depth before you meet them, and you receive written notes.
Agree the brief
We start by learning your device portfolio, where products sit in development, how your design controls are documented and what recent audits found. We ask whether you need someone to fix procedures, support a launch or strengthen risk files.

Qualify the work and support the hire
We confirm compensation, relocation and restrictions early. Our fee is a percentage of first-year base salary, agreed in writing before the search starts, and you owe nothing unless you hire.

How do your fees work for a Design Quality Engineer?
We charge a percentage of the engineer's first-year base salary, confirmed in writing before the search starts. It does not include bonus or relocation.
How do you keep the search confidential?
We describe your devices in general terms and never share product details, development timelines or submission plans. Candidates are asked to respect the same confidentiality about their current employers.
Can you find design quality engineers who aren't looking?
Yes: Most are mid-program and not browsing. We reach out directly, describe the device work and let them decide if it is worth a conversation.
Do design quality engineers relocate?
Some do. Device development hubs matter, so we ask early about location flexibility, family and timing, and we tell you if a candidate prefers a hybrid arrangement.
Do you search under titles like Design Assurance Engineer?
Yes: Design Assurance Engineer and R&D Quality Engineer often describe the same work, so we search across them and judge on design controls and risk management depth, not on whether the title says design or assurance. We ask the candidate to describe a device program under 21 CFR 820 and ISO 13485: design inputs, outputs, reviews, verification, validation, transfer and design changes.

The Six-Step Search
What do you get before interviewing?
1. Search CalibrationYou get a hiring brief that separates the work, reporting authority and non-negotiable requirements. We agree what would make a candidate worth an interview before contacting anyone. 2. Market MappingYou get a defined search pool, not a reposted vacancy.
1. Search Calibration
You get a hiring brief that separates the work, reporting authority and non-negotiable requirements. We agree what would make a candidate worth an interview before contacting anyone.
2. Market Mapping
You get a defined search pool, not a reposted vacancy. We identify the kinds of plants and teams where people already handle comparable equipment, processes and operating demands.
3. Professional Contact Intelligence
You get a way to reach working people directly. We check professional contact routes and approach candidates discreetly, without making your plant or vacancy public unless you approve.
4. Persistent Personalized Outreach
You get individual conversations about the actual opening. We explain the work, shift and location, ask whether a move makes sense, and follow up without pretending every person is interested.
5. Live Candidate Qualification
You get evidence of fit before spending interview time. We talk through decisions, equipment, results and reasons for moving, then distinguish direct experience from skills that would need support.
6. Candidate Intelligence and Process Support
You get a focused short list with the information behind it. We explain motivation, practical constraints and concerns, support interviews, and keep offer decisions with your hiring team.
What should we discuss first?
When do we owe the fee?
Only when a Design Quality Engineer we introduced accepts your offer and starts. Interviews and declined offers do not trigger a fee.
What should you know before sending design quality engineer?
When do you pay a recruiting fee?
No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. The signed recruiting agreement sets the fee basis and payment terms. Sending an opening does not itself commit you to a fee or an exclusive arrangement.
How long does it take to see a short list?
We discuss the search conditions before describing a realistic next step. Shift, location, equipment match and the candidate's reasons for moving all matter. We do not promise a shortlist date before understanding the opening.
How do you handle counteroffers?
We ask what is driving the move before introducing a candidate. We discuss what might change if the current employer offers more money or a different job. Your team still decides whether that person's motivation fits the opening.
What replacement terms apply?
We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.
What do you not do?
We do not bill hourly for a standard permanent search, repost a job-board ad as a search, or supply high-volume general labor. Retainers are not the default. Any different arrangement must be agreed in writing.
