The hiring decision

What makes this hire work on your plant floor?

A mechanical design engineer hire usually answers a backlog: drawings waiting on a checker, a product with a tolerance stack nobody has revisited, or a customer change request that stalled in someone's inbox. We search for the engineer whose models build correctly the first time and whose drawings the shop can read.

We ask which systems the candidate used, such as parametric mechanical CAD, product design CAD, mechanical design CAD or integrated CAD/CAM, and how they built assemblies. We look for stable parametric models, sensible use of configurations and top down layout skeletons.

We ask how they applied ASME Y14.5, selected datums based on function and assembly, and decided between profile and position tolerances.

Before an introduction

What do we check before you interview?

Our recruiter conversations establish what the candidate says they personally handled, how they made decisions and why they would consider this opening. The brief identifies candidate-reported information, available supporting evidence and unresolved questions. Your team still assesses technical performance, site-specific safety requirements and the authority the person will need.

  • Tolerance stack analysis

Many assemblies fail from stacked variation. We ask how they ran stacks, whether worst case or statistical, and how they incorporated process capability from suppliers. A candidate who can describe a field failure traced to a missed stack shows real experience.

  • FEA and testing

We probe how they used engineering simulation software or similar tools, what boundary conditions they questioned, and how they correlated simulation to physical tests. We look for engineers who distrust a pretty plot and who can say when simulation was unnecessary.

  • Design for manufacture and cost

We ask how they selected materials, designed castings, weldments or machined parts for the shop that would build them, and whether they visited suppliers.

  • Change control and documentation

We ask about engineering change orders, bills of material accuracy, revision control in PDM or PLM and handoffs to manufacturing. Red flags include a history of unmanaged redlines or a habit of treating documentation as an afterthought.

Direct search

Where are qualified people working now?

Mechanical design engineers are found at peer OEMs building products with similar mechanisms, loads and standards. These engineers have worked within design reviews and change control and understand how designs behave in production and the field.

We also approach recent graduates from strong engineering programs when your team can mentor, with attention to those who spent co-op terms on real products or ran design build teams that had to make parts, and engineers at job shops or contract design firms who see many industries but want ownership of one product line. We contact people privately, describe your products by type, and share your name once interest is established. Designers from equipment makers who have watched their drawings turn into welded and machined parts on a shop floor are especially valuable, because they have learned from scrap.

Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?

  • CAD platform and model quality. Candidates who cannot explain why a rebuild failed have probably not built complex models.
  • GD&T and drawing practice. We also ask about a time a supplier could not hold a tolerance, and how they changed the print instead of arguing.
  • Design for manufacture and cost. Strong candidates describe a design change that cut cost without hurting performance and how they proved it.

Executive-search discipline, on every assignment

What do you get from the Six-Step Search?

Plant leaders, engineers and skilled technicians receive the same care in defining the work, researching relevant backgrounds and understanding the individual. Pulling a list and sending messages is not the hard part. The value is doing the research and qualification well enough to support a sound hiring decision.

  1. Calibrate the work and the decision

We start with the operating problem, what the hire must improve and the decisions they will own. We agree what experience matters, who supports the role and what you can realistically offer. A maintenance leader inheriting reactive breakdowns needs a different brief from one building a reliability program.

  2. Research relevant plants and people

We research manufacturing environments where people have handled comparable work. Process, equipment and decision authority matter more than a matching title. We look for relevant professionals, including people who are not applying, rather than treating an exported list as a completed search.

  3. Make respectful, targeted contact

We explain why the work may be relevant and invite a conversation without pressure. We agree what information may be shared on a confidential search. Contact is the start of qualification, not evidence that someone wants the job or fits it.

  4. Discuss the work they personally performed

Our conversations separate an individual's decisions and responsibilities from the team's results. We explore judgment under pressure, reasons for considering a move and practical expectations. For technicians, that includes equipment background, shift, commute and the support available. Candidate accounts are identified as such; a conversation is not a technical certification.

  5. Write down fit, gaps and open questions

You receive a written candidate brief connecting the person's background to your operating problem. It explains motivation and practical fit, the gaps we have identified and what remains to assess. We distinguish candidate-reported information from supporting evidence rather than presenting every statement as independently verified.

  6. Stay involved through interviews and offers

We use your interview feedback to clarify gaps and keep both sides informed about the work and expectations. We help address offer questions, counteroffers and practical concerns without promising an acceptance. Your team makes the hiring decision and assesses technical capability and site-specific requirements. A shortlist is an output of this work, not the whole service.

What else affects this Mechanical Design Engineer hire?

What does a mechanical design engineer search cost?

A percentage of first year base salary, agreed in writing before we begin. There is no retainer, and the percentage is fixed in the agreement rather than by the number of candidates.

Can the search be confidential?

Yes: We describe the opening by product type and seniority without naming you. If you are replacing someone who has not left, we keep that private and do not contact anyone inside your engineering group.

Do you reach engineers who are not looking?

Yes: Competent design engineers are usually busy and not searching. We approach them directly, ask about the products they design, and discuss ownership and technical challenge before any mention of compensation.

What about relocation for design engineers?

It depends on your market. We ask about cost of living, family and any remote flexibility early. Some design engineers will relocate for a product they find compelling, so we tell them about the product first.

Which titles do you consider?

Design engineer, product design engineer and mechanical engineer are the common alternates. We read the duties instead of the title, so a mechanical engineer who spent years on design is considered.

What should we discuss first?

When do I owe the fee?

Only if you hire a design engineer we introduced. No hire, no fee. The written terms describe invoice timing after a confirmed start date.

Questions before starting a search

When do you pay a recruiting fee?

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. The signed recruiting agreement sets the fee basis and payment terms. Sending an opening does not itself commit you to a fee or an exclusive arrangement.

How long does it take to see a short list?

We discuss the search conditions before describing a realistic next step. Shift, location, equipment match and the candidate's reasons for moving all matter. We do not promise a shortlist date before understanding the opening.

How do you handle counteroffers?

We ask what is driving the move before introducing a candidate. We discuss what might change if the current employer offers more money or a different job. Your team still decides whether that person's motivation fits the opening.

What replacement terms apply?

We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.

What do you not do?

We do not bill hourly for a standard permanent search, repost a job-board ad as a search, or supply high-volume general labor. Retainers are not the default. Any different arrangement must be agreed in writing.
