What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?

For Buyer / Senior Buyer, separate the guaranteed salary from any discretionary bonus or commission arrangement. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.

Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.

Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.

What should you know about two BLS releases?

Buyer / Senior Buyer in the United States, annual wages, May 2024 and May 2025
Release period25thMedian75th
May 2024$58,670$75,650$99,190
May 2025$60,800$77,710$100,820

These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.

What should you know about a move that can hold up?

Someone working in manufacturing buyers with comparable material and supplier workloads needs a clear reason to leave. Explain how your opening changes their responsibility for purchase orders and supplier follow-through against production need. If the answer depends on authority over purchase orders and supplier follow-through against production need that you cannot offer, that mismatch belongs in the conversation before an offer.

What should you know about questions?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

What is the median pay for a Buyer / Senior Buyer?

The median annual wage for Buyers and Purchasing Agents in the United States was $77,710 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $60,800 and $100,820. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.

What does the 10th percentile mean here?

10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $48,380. 90% earned less than $128,870.

Does this include overtime or bonuses?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Is this the pay for a Buyer / Senior Buyer at a plant?

BLS measures this broader occupation across industries. It does not publish a separate wage for this manufacturing title. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.

How many people work in this occupation?

BLS estimated 491,430 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?

The Buyer / Senior Buyer title is mapped to SOC 13-1020, Buyers and Purchasing Agents. This broad category reports a national median annual wage of $77,710, an increase of $2,060 over the May 2024 reporting. The middle-band width is $40,020, ranging from a P25 of $60,800 to a P75 of $100,820.

This data represents the entire purchasing agent profession across all industries, including retail, government, and manufacturing, which often leads to wage compression for manufacturing-specific roles that require independent sourcing and complex supply chain negotiation authority.

In the regional hiring hubs, the New York-Newark-Jersey City area reports a median of $83,350, while Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim reports $82,500. New York has a location quotient of 0.98, and Los Angeles has a quotient of 0.92. These hubs show that even in major metropolitan areas with high cost of labor, the purchasing agent median remains within a relatively tight range. These figures do not account for the distinction between transactional buying and deep-sourcing roles, which is a common source of confusion when using this broad BLS dataset for specialized manufacturing recruitment.

Manufacturing industries provide more focused data, with Aerospace Product and Parts Manufacturing reporting a median of $97,890 and Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing at $94,450. These industry-specific figures are significantly higher than the $77,710 general median, reflecting the high value of technical procurement experience. Hiring managers should note that these medians omit essential procurement components like performance incentives, cost-saving bonuses, and stock options. The $40,020 middle-band width indicates that the skill gap between a general buyer and a senior-level strategic sourcing professional is substantial. Recruitment must be targeted toward the upper end of the P75 band to attract candidates capable of handling material constraints and complex international logistics. Because this role requires independent judgment in supply-chain stability, relying on the $77,710 national median would likely fail to attract the caliber of professional required for a modern manufacturing operation.

Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?

Why is the aerospace industry median $97,890?

Aerospace manufacturing requires specialized technical purchasing and high-stakes negotiation. This industry values experienced procurement professionals more highly than the broader market average.

How should managers use the $40,020 middle-band width?

This range illustrates the wide pay gap between junior buyers and experienced senior buyers. Managers should place experienced hires toward the $100,820 P75 figure to remain competitive.

Does this data include performance-based bonuses for buyers?

No, BLS wage data captures base salary only. Procurement roles often include significant incentives for cost-savings that are not reflected in these $77,710 national figures.
