What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?

For EHS Director, clarify the base pay before discussing call-outs, travel or extra shifts. OEWS measures straight-time gross wages, not pure base salary or total compensation. It includes base rate, guaranteed pay, commissions and production bonuses. It excludes overtime, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses and benefits.

An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure. Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.

Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.

What should you know about two BLS releases?

EHS Director in the United States, annual wages, May 2024 and May 2025
Release period25thMedian75th
May 2024$100,010$136,550$179,190
May 2025$102,880$141,900$186,300

These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.

Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.

What should you know about authority and independence?

The reporting line matters for a role that may need to say no. A director reporting to the chief operating officer can be pulled into production priorities, while one with a line to the CEO or owner has a firmer footing.

We ask owners how they would respond when the director shuts down a line, and ask candidates what they did in a similar moment. In union groups, the director also coordinates with labor relations on safety committees and discipline, and learns to separate local plant practice from group standards without weakening either.

What should you know about questions?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

What is the median pay for a EHS Director?

What does the 10th percentile mean here?

10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $74,300. 90% earned less than $238,270.

Does this include overtime or bonuses?

What does this data mean for your opening?

EHS Director roles, tracked under the broader SOC 11-9199 category, currently command a national median annual wage of $141,900. For EHS Director in the United States, releases are separate survey estimates. The May 2025 median is $141,900; the May 2024 median is $136,550. Their arithmetic difference is $5,350.

They are not the same workers' raises and do not establish a pay trend or its cause. The middle band width for this occupation is $83,420, which is determined by the salary levels at the 75th and 25th percentiles. This data encompasses diverse industries beyond just manufacturing, meaning the figures do not isolate plant-specific leadership roles or multi-site responsibility scopes.

Manufacturing industry benchmarks provide a more specific view of compensation for this level of leadership. The Navigational, Measuring, Electromedical, and Control Instruments Manufacturing industry leads with a median of $202,090. Semiconductor and Other Electronic Component Manufacturing holds a median of $197,920, and Computer and Electronic Product Manufacturing reports $192,620. Manufacturing Headhunters observes that these national sector benchmarks are critical for context, as they align more closely with complex manufacturing EHS duties than the general national aggregate.

Geography significantly influences the wage profiles when comparing to high-employment metros. The Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV area presents a median of $170,980 with a middle band width of $43,200. In comparison, the New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ metro shows a median of $169,800 with a significantly broader middle band width of $89,320. These figures demonstrate that regional labor market dynamics can shift pay levels well above the national median.

For EHS Director in the United States, OEWS measures straight-time gross wages, not pure base salary or total compensation. Commissions and production bonuses are included; overtime, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses and benefits are excluded. Furthermore, the location quotient for the Washington metro is 3.35, while the New York metro sits at 0.91, illustrating varying levels of employment concentration. The data presented covers a total national employment of 622,190 for this occupation category, providing a sound, albeit broad, framework for analysis.

Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?

The national median is based on a broad occupational group and is likely lower than the compensation found in specialized manufacturing industries. Industry-specific rows such as the $202,090 median for measuring instrument manufacturing provide more accurate benchmarks for that sector.

Does the $141,900 national median accurately represent the pay for an EHS Director in manufacturing?

The national median is based on a broad occupational group and is likely lower than the compensation found in specialized manufacturing industries. Industry-specific rows such as the $202,090 median for measuring instrument manufacturing provide more accurate benchmarks for that sector.

What accounts for the change in the EHS Director median between May 2024 and May 2025?

For EHS Director in the United States, releases are separate survey estimates. The May 2025 median is $141,900; the May 2024 median is $136,550. Their arithmetic difference is $5,350. They are not the same workers' raises and do not establish a pay trend or its cause.

Why is the middle band width for the New York-Newark-Jersey City area significantly wider than the national band?

The New York-Newark-Jersey City metro area shows a middle band width of $89,320, compared to the national band of $83,420. This indicates a wider range of salary distribution among the 25th and 75th percentiles within the local labor market.
