What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?
For EHS Manager, clarify the base pay before discussing call-outs, travel or extra shifts. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.
Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.
Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.
What should you know about two BLS releases?
| Release period | 25th | Median | 75th |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 2024 | $100,010 | $136,550 | $179,190 |
| May 2025 | $102,880 | $141,900 | $186,300 |
These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.
Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.
What should you know about qualification in practice?
Qualified means a program the candidate can describe and defend. We ask what they built, including lockout, machine guarding, hazard communication, training and incident investigation. We ask about trends in recordable incidents and serious injury potential, but we care more about how the number was achieved than the number itself.
We ask about regulator interactions, including how an inspection was handled. Certifications such as OSHA 30 hour training or a professional safety credential are common and worth confirming. A union plant background matters when safety committees are contractual.
What should you know about questions?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

What should you know about related?
What does this data mean for your opening?
The EHS Manager role, mapped under the SOC 11-9199 broader category for all other managers, shows a national median annual wage of $141,900. The middle band width for this occupation is $83,420, representing the variance between the 25th and 75th percentiles. These statistics capture national labor conditions, though they do not isolate specific manufacturing duties like permit management or recordkeeping.
National industry-specific rows indicate significant variance for EHS-related titles within manufacturing. Navigational, Measuring, Electromedical, and Control Instruments Manufacturing reports a median of $202,090. Semiconductor and Other Electronic Component Manufacturing shows a median of $197,920, while Computer and Electronic Product Manufacturing sits at $192,620. Manufacturing Headhunters notes that these higher benchmarks often correlate with the complex regulatory environments and high-precision safety standards inherent in these sectors.
The Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV metro area reports a median of $170,980 with a middle band width of $43,200. Conversely, the New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ area shows a median of $169,800 and a wider middle band width of $89,320. These comparisons highlight how urban centers with high employment concentrations for this broader occupation can exceed the national median wage for manufacturing-specific EHS managers.
It is important to note that BLS wage data excludes components like equity, specific safety certification bonuses, or on-call pay structures. The location quotient for the Washington metro area is 3.35, indicating a high concentration of this employment, while the New York metro reflects a 0.91 location quotient. The provided national figures represent the latest release and exclude employer-specific benefits or non-wage compensation.
Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?
The middle band width of $89,320 reflects the spread between the 25th and 75th percentiles for the broad occupation in that metro. It does not account for specific manufacturing experience or certifications that would narrow this range in a private hiring scenario.
Why is there such a significant difference between the national median for EHS Managers and industry-specific benchmarks?
The national median of $141,900 covers a broad, cross-industry category, while manufacturing-specific sectors like semiconductors reflect unique market demands. These industry-specific rows represent specialized sectors that often pay premiums for regulatory compliance and safety expertise.
How did the EHS Manager median change from May 2024 to May 2025?
The median for this role increased by $5,350, rising from $136,550 to $141,900. This trend indicates consistent growth in the compensation data for this broader management category.
What is the limitation of the middle band width provided for the New York-Newark-Jersey City area?
The middle band width of $89,320 reflects the spread between the 25th and 75th percentiles for the broad occupation in that metro. It does not account for specific manufacturing experience or certifications that would narrow this range in a private hiring scenario.
