What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?

For Safety Manager, clarify the base pay before discussing call-outs, travel or extra shifts. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.

Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.

Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.

What should you know about two BLS releases?

Safety Manager in the United States, annual wages, May 2024 and May 2025
Release period25thMedian75th
May 2024$100,010$136,550$179,190
May 2025$102,880$141,900$186,300

These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.

Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.

What should you know about qualification in practice?

Qualified means practical programs and trends the candidate can explain. We ask what they built or repaired, including lockout, guarding, powered industrial truck training and hazard reporting. We ask how they handled a serious incident, how the investigation ran and what changed. We ask for audit results and how they tracked corrective actions.

Credentials such as OSHA 30 hour training, or a safety certification, are useful. A person without a degree but with years of floor credibility may be a stronger match than one with a degree and little plant time.

What should you know about questions?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

What is the median pay for a Safety Manager?

The median annual wage for Managers, All Other in the United States was $141,900 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $102,880 and $186,300. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.

What does the 10th percentile mean here?

10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $74,300. 90% earned less than $238,270.

Does this include overtime or bonuses?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

Is this the pay for a Safety Manager at a plant?

BLS measures this broader occupation across industries. It does not publish a separate wage for this manufacturing title. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.

How many people work in this occupation?

BLS estimated 622,190 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?

The role of Safety Manager is measured under the broader SOC 11-9199 category, resulting in a national median annual wage of $141,900. This reflects a $5,350 increase over the May 2024 median of $136,550. The middle band width for this category is $83,420.

While these numbers provide a baseline, Manufacturing Headhunters notes they do not separate out site-specific safety leadership duties or complex process safety requirements common in industrial environments.

National sector-specific data offers a clearer picture of wage potential in manufacturing environments. In Navigational, Measuring, Electromedical, and Control Instruments Manufacturing, the median is $202,090. Semiconductor and Other Electronic Component Manufacturing shows a median of $197,920, and Computer and Electronic Product Manufacturing reports a median of $192,620. These figures, which represent national industry rows, are essential for evaluating roles where site-level hazards require highly specialized technical oversight.

Regional employment trends show significant variation from the national median. Conversely, the New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ metro area shows a median of $169,800 with a middle band width of $89,320. These variations confirm that metropolitan labor markets with high concentrations of this occupation influence compensation structures significantly.

It must be noted that BLS data excludes non-base compensation such as annual bonuses, signing incentives, and benefits packages, which are standard in many manufacturing organizations. The total employment for this occupation is 622,190. Additionally, the location quotient for the Washington metro is 3.35, while the New York metro has a 0.91 quotient. These figures reflect employment density rather than the availability of qualified candidates or specific local pay policies.

Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?

How does the national median for Safety Managers compare to the May 2024 benchmark?

The national median for this occupation rose by $5,350, reaching $141,900 in May 2025. This increase is consistent with the broader data provided for the management category.

Are the industry-specific medians for semiconductors and measuring instruments applicable to all safety managers?

No, these industry-specific rows are for national sector averages and provide context for highly technical manufacturing environments. Individual salaries are based on specific job complexity, company size, and local market conditions.

What is the limitation of the location quotient provided for the Washington and New York metro areas?

The location quotient indicates the concentration of employment for this occupation compared to the national average. It does not measure local wage competitiveness, talent availability, or the specific demand for safety management skills in the region.
