What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?

For Process Safety Manager, clarify the base pay before discussing call-outs, travel or extra shifts. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.

Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.

Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.

What should you know about two BLS releases?

Process Safety Manager in the United States, annual wages, May 2024 and May 2025
Release period25thMedian75th
May 2024$100,010$136,550$179,190
May 2025$102,880$141,900$186,300

These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.

Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.

What should you know about management of change as it really runs?

Management of change fails at the edges: a temporary bypass, a like for like replacement that was not, a software edit made at two in the morning. We ask how the candidate caught those, what the form looked like, who signed, and how pre startup safety reviews were enforced against a maintenance crew with a deadline.

Good candidates describe a system that operators use. Weak ones describe a policy that was written to pass an audit and then ignored.

What should you know about questions?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

What is the median pay for a Process Safety Manager?

The median annual wage for Managers, All Other in the United States was $141,900 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $102,880 and $186,300. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.

What does the 10th percentile mean here?

10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $74,300. 90% earned less than $238,270.

Does this include overtime or bonuses?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

Is this the pay for a Process Safety Manager at a plant?

BLS measures this broader occupation across industries. It does not publish a separate wage for this manufacturing title. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.

How many people work in this occupation?

BLS estimated 622,190 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?

Process Safety Managers are evaluated using the SOC 11-9199 category, which shows a national median annual wage of $141,900. This is an increase of $5,350 from the previous May 2024 median of $136,550. The middle band width for this occupation is $83,420, derived from the 25th and 75th percentile values.

Manufacturing Headhunters notes that these figures do not specifically isolate the highly technical process safety disciplines or OSHA PSM/EPA RMP compliance responsibilities.

National manufacturing industries that frequently require deep process safety expertise provide more targeted benchmarks. Navigational, Measuring, Electromedical, and Control Instruments Manufacturing reports a median of $202,090, followed by Semiconductor and Other Electronic Component Manufacturing at $197,920, and Computer and Electronic Product Manufacturing at $192,620. These figures, which represent national sector averages, demonstrate that technical manufacturing industries generally exceed the aggregate median.

Regional employment centers provide different salary profiles based on their specific local labor market conditions. In comparison, the New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ metro shows a median of $169,800 with a middle band width of $89,320. These metros are currently the highest employment hubs for this occupational code.

BLS reporting excludes critical elements like hazard-pay adjustments, safety-specific performance bonuses, and long-term incentive packages. The total employment count for this category is 622,190. Additionally, the location quotient for the Washington metro is 3.35, while the New York metro has a 0.91 location quotient. The provided data represents current employment trends and does not account for the specific expertise needed to manage complex process safety management programs in plant environments.

Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?

Are the sector-specific medians for semiconductor and instrument manufacturing indicative of a typical Process Safety Manager salary?

These figures represent national sector averages, which are often higher than the general occupational median. They are relevant for benchmark comparison but are not intended to represent the only salary range for these positions.

How much has the median salary for this broad management occupation grown since May 2024?

The national median increased by $5,350, rising from $136,550 to $141,900. This represents the total change over the one-year reporting period.

What is the difference in middle band width between the national dataset and the Washington metro?

The national middle band width is $83,420, while the Washington metro area shows a narrower band of $43,200. This indicates a more compressed salary range for the middle 50 percent of the labor force in that specific region.
