What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?
For Facilities Manager, clarify the base pay before discussing call-outs, travel or extra shifts. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.
Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.
Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.
What should you know about two BLS releases?
| Release period | 25th | Median | 75th |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 2024 | $80,150 | $104,690 | $135,650 |
| May 2025 | $82,020 | $106,660 | $138,870 |
These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.
Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.
What should you know about contractor management?
Facilities work is mostly contractors. We ask how they scoped work, compared bids, supervised safety, handled change orders and managed a poor performer. We also ask how they handled access control and permits for work in production areas.
What should you know about questions?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
What is the median pay for a Facilities Manager?

What does the 10th percentile mean here?
10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $64,480. 90% earned less than $176,120.
Does this include overtime or bonuses?

What does this data mean for your opening?
The national wage data for Facilities Managers, categorized under SOC 11-3013, reflects a broad cross-industry occupational standard. Manufacturing Headhunters observes that this data includes general maintenance and building operations duties but lacks specific separation for complex plant-side roles like boiler compliance or cleanroom HVAC management.
The national median annual wage is $106,660, which represents a $1,970 increase from the May 2024 median of $104,690. The middle band width, defined as the difference between the 75th and 25th percentiles, is $56,850.
National manufacturing industry wages provide essential benchmarks for this role. In the Iron and Steel Mills and Ferroalloy Manufacturing industry, the median is $200,600. In Aerospace Product and Parts Manufacturing, the median is $157,460. Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing reports a median of $155,590. These figures, which focus on national manufacturing sectors rather than local area data, show that specialized industrial facilities roles command significant premiums over the general occupational median.
When comparing the national data against major employment hubs, the wage profiles diverge significantly. The New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ metro shows a median of $134,010 with a middle band width of $68,190. These figures are not hourly equivalents but represent annual salary benchmarks within those specific high-density labor markets.
BLS data does not capture all pay components typical in manufacturing environments, such as performance bonuses, shift differentials, or specific hazardous duty incentives. These elements are frequently negotiated beyond the base salary ranges presented here. The location quotient in these hubs measures employment concentration, not the availability of talent or local prevailing wage rates. The data provided reflects current employment figures of 156,180 nationwide for this occupation.
Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?
How does the national median wage for Facilities Managers compare to the May 2024 reporting?
The national median wage increased by $1,970, moving from $104,690 in May 2024 to $106,660 in May 2025. This change reflects the general upward movement in the broader occupational data tracked by the BLS.
Does the national data specifically account for manufacturing-specific facilities roles like cleanroom management?
No, the provided SOC data is for a broad occupational category and does not break out specific plant-level requirements. Manufacturing Headhunters notes that these nuances are generally considered part of the individual employer’s compensation structure.
What is the difference between the reported middle band width for Chicago and the national data?
The middle band width for the Chicago metro area is $49,380, while the national figure is $56,850. This indicates a narrower spread between the 25th and 75th percentiles in the Chicago market compared to the national average.
