What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?

For Instrumentation & Electrical (I&E) Technician, write the straight-time rate separately from shift coverage and extra hours. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.

Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.

Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.

What should you know about two BLS releases?

Instrumentation & Electrical (I&E) Technician in the United States, annual wages, May 2024 and May 2025
Release period25thMedian75th
May 2024$56,750$71,300$85,160
May 2025$60,040$74,090$88,710

These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.

What should you know about supervisory and worker occupations?

BLS publishes these as separate occupations. Pay for one is not a pay step for the other.

Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.

What should you know about dCS exposure?

distributed control software, process control systems and distributed control systems systems have different habits. We ask what the candidate has touched, whether they only observed or also changed configuration, and under what rules.

What should you know about questions?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

What is the median pay for a Instrumentation & Electrical (I&E) Technician?

The median annual wage for Electrical and Electronics Repairers, Commercial and Industrial Equipment in the United States was $74,090 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $60,040 and $88,710. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.

What does the 10th percentile mean here?

10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $46,840. 90% earned less than $105,590.

Does this include overtime or bonuses?

What does this data mean for your opening?

72 in Dallas, and it does not define the availability of qualified I&E candidates. The middle-band width and median change are simple arithmetic results. As BLS does not separate I&E work from other electronic repair functions, the median represents a generic category.

The Instrumentation and Electrical Technician role is captured under the SOC 49-2094 classification. The national median salary for this occupation is $74,090 as of May 2025, which reflects a $2,790 rise from the May 2024 figure of $71,300. The distribution of pay shows a middle-band width of $28,670, calculated from a 25th percentile of $60,040 and a 75th percentile of $88,710. Manufacturing Headhunters notes that these statistics represent a broad occupational group. BLS data does not isolate the unique plant-level duties of an I&E technician, such as HART transmitter calibration or loop checks, from other commercial or industrial equipment repairers. Furthermore, the reported data excludes critical pay components like weekend differential, call-out bonuses, and certifications that often drive compensation.

Regional data shows that Houston-Pasadena-The Woodlands, TX, reports a median of $77,880, whereas Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, TX, lists a median of $73,530. The middle-band width for Houston is significantly larger at $38,900 compared to Dallas at $25,830. On a national industry level, the Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing sector lists a median of $105,590, and Aerospace Product and Parts Manufacturing reflects a median of $109,570. These industry figures are national-only aggregations and do not reflect local area pay for technical maintenance staff.

It is important to understand that the location quotient is a measure of industrial concentration, standing at 3.41 in Houston and 1.72 in Dallas, and it does not define the availability of qualified I&E candidates. The middle-band width and median change are simple arithmetic results. As BLS does not separate I&E work from other electronic repair functions, the median represents a generic category. There is no accounting for specific employer needs or the cost of living fluctuations across the comparison metros. The provided numbers are the absolute values available in the current dataset and should be used as a general guide rather than specific wage targets.

Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?

The national median salary increased by $2,790, moving from $71,300 in May 2024 to $74,090 in May 2025. This change represents the shift in the median value for the SOC 49-2094 occupation.

How does the Houston middle-band width compare to the national average?

The Houston-Pasadena-The Woodlands middle-band width is $38,900, which is larger than the national middle-band width of $28,670. This reflects the specific dispersion of pay rates within the Houston labor market.

Are the Petroleum and Aerospace industry wages reflective of local I&E technician pay?

No, industry wages like $105,590 for Petroleum and $109,570 for Aerospace are national aggregates. They do not account for local labor market conditions or the specific duties of I&E technicians.
