What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?
For Sustainability Manager / Director, clarify the base pay before discussing call-outs, travel or extra shifts. OEWS measures straight-time gross wages, not pure base salary or total compensation. It includes base rate, guaranteed pay, commissions and production bonuses. It excludes overtime, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses and benefits.
An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure. Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.
Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.
What should you know about two BLS releases?
| Release period | 25th | Median | 75th |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 2024 | $100,010 | $136,550 | $179,190 |
| May 2025 | $102,880 | $141,900 | $186,300 |
These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.
Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.
What should you know about an interview based on the work?
Build the interview around operational sustainability priorities that plant teams can act on. A practical discussion of a project with a clear boundary for energy, water or material accounting can test judgment without using confidential drawings or customer information. Those limits help establish operational responsibility versus corporate reporting and communications; they are part of competence, not a weakness to talk around.
What should you know about questions?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
What is the median pay for a Sustainability Manager / Director?

What does the 10th percentile mean here?
10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $74,300. 90% earned less than $238,270.
Does this include overtime or bonuses?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Is this the pay for a Sustainability Manager / Director at a plant?
BLS measures this broader occupation across industries. It does not publish a separate wage for this manufacturing title. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.
How many people work in this occupation?

What should you know about related?
What does this data mean for your opening?
The national median for the broader category encompassing this role is $141,900, with a $5,350 change from the previous $136,550 baseline. The middle-band width is $83,420, derived from P25 of $102,880 and P75 of $186,300. There are 622,190 jobs within the overarching SOC classification.
As Manufacturing Headhunters observes, these figures are annual wages and omit benefits, stock, and other non-cash compensation. Use these numbers as a gauge for broad management-level positions rather than focused sustainability roles.
In the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria area, the median pay reaches $170,980 with a middle-band width of $43,200. New York-Newark-Jersey City reports a median of $169,800 and a much wider middle-band of $89,320. The location quotient in the Washington area is 3.35, which denotes a higher density of such roles than in New York. The discrepancy between the middle-bands suggests different salary structures in these two major metropolitan areas.
Looking at national industry data, Computer and Electronic Product Manufacturing shows a median of $192,620. Navigational, Measuring, Electromedical, and Control Instruments Manufacturing shows $202,090, while Semiconductor manufacturing reflects $197,920. These figures are significantly above the national median, reflecting the value placed on management talent in these specific industries. Remember that these sectors do not separate sustainability duties, meaning these numbers should be balanced against the general scope of the SOC category.
Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?
What does the location quotient reveal about the Washington hub?
The 3.35 location quotient indicates a very high concentration of this broad management occupation compared to the national average. This concentration often correlates with specific regional industrial demands.
How does the middle-band width impact hiring offers?
The wide gap between P25 and P75 highlights that there is no singular 'market' pay. Hiring managers should consider this variance when determining an offer relative to experience.
Does the BLS capture roles strictly working on energy accounting?
No, the broader management category includes various roles beyond sustainability management. The data represents a wide range of administrative and managerial responsibilities within these organizations.
