What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?

For Packaging Supervisor, separate the guaranteed salary from any discretionary bonus or commission arrangement. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.

Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.

Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.

What should you know about two BLS releases?

Packaging Supervisor in the United States, annual wages, May 2024 and May 2025
Release period25thMedian75th
May 2024$56,330$71,190$86,770
May 2025$58,630$74,450$91,680

These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.

What should you know about supervisory and worker occupations?

BLS publishes these as separate occupations. Pay for one is not a pay step for the other.

Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.

What should you know about the actual remit?

Write down who is accountable for packaging crews, changeovers and finished-pack quality today. If responsibility for packaging crews, changeovers and finished-pack quality is divided between several people, tell us where this hire's work begins and ends. We ask candidates to explain a changeover decision that protected line clearance and pack accuracy, including their own decision and what somebody else approved.

That explanation helps separate their capability from a team's success at packaging crews, changeovers and finished-pack quality.

What should you know about questions?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

What is the median pay for a Packaging Supervisor?

The median annual wage for First-Line Supervisors of Production and Operating Workers in the United States was $74,450 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $58,630 and $91,680. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.

What does the 10th percentile mean here?

10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $47,130. 90% earned less than $108,750.

Does this include overtime or bonuses?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

Is this the pay for a Packaging Supervisor at a plant?

BLS measures this broader occupation across industries. It does not publish a separate wage for this manufacturing title. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.

How many people work in this occupation?

BLS estimated 673,430 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?

Manufacturing Headhunters analyzes the Packaging Supervisor role under the First-Line Supervisors of Production and Operating Workers SOC. The current national median is $74,450 as of May 2025, up from $71,190 in May 2024. Industry-specific data shows varied medians, such as $124,260 in Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing and $97,080 in Pulp, Paper, and Paperboard Mills.

These figures indicate that packaging-focused supervision in specific high-value industries commands a significant premium over the national average for supervisors, reflecting the high technicality required in those specific plant environments.

The national P25 to P75 middle-band width is $33,050, stretching from $58,630 to $91,680. Comparing this to major hubs, Chicago reports a median of $76,500, and New York-Newark-Jersey City reports $81,790. These regional data points are higher than the national median, illustrating the localized demand for skilled packaging supervisors. Note that these medians represent standard annual salary and do not include the overtime pay, performance bonuses, or specific shift premiums that are standard for this level of responsibility in 24/7 manufacturing environments.

A Packaging Supervisor handles line changeovers and ensures pack accuracy and line clearance. This role is strictly focused on the packaging stage of production, rather than the earlier processing stages. Successful performance depends on balancing line speed with quality standards. The BLS data for First-Line Supervisors offers a broad, consistent benchmark for this work. Because the SOC code covers all production supervisors, it does not separate packaging from assembly or other tasks. Recruiters use this as a baseline, but tailor actual offers based on the specific equipment complexity and the critical nature of the packaging operation.

Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?

How did the national median change from 2024 to 2025?

The national median rose by $3,260, from $71,190 in May 2024 to $74,450 in May 2025.

What is the middle-band width for packaging supervisors?

The national middle-band width is $33,050, calculated from the 25th percentile of $58,630 and the 75th percentile of $91,680.

How does the New York metropolitan area compare to the national median?

The New York-Newark-Jersey City hub has a median of $81,790, which is higher than the national median of $74,450, reflecting regional cost and demand factors.
