What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?
For Shift Supervisor, separate the guaranteed salary from any discretionary bonus or commission arrangement. OEWS includes base rate, guaranteed pay and production incentive pay. It excludes overtime premium, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure.
Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.
Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.
What should you know about two BLS releases?
| Release period | 25th | Median | 75th |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 2024 | $56,330 | $71,190 | $86,770 |
| May 2025 | $58,630 | $74,450 | $91,680 |
These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.
What should you know about supervisory and worker occupations?
BLS publishes these as separate occupations. Pay for one is not a pay step for the other.

- Worker occupation: CNC Setup Machinist pay (SOC 51-9161)

What should you know about the authority you are offering?
Settle shift coverage and escalation authority when other managers are absent before outreach begins. We put the difference around shift coverage and escalation authority when other managers are absent in front of you so the interview tests missing experience rather than assuming it is already there.
What should you know about questions?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
What is the median pay for a Shift Supervisor?
The median annual wage for First-Line Supervisors of Production and Operating Workers in the United States was $74,450 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $58,630 and $91,680. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.
What does the 10th percentile mean here?
10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $47,130. 90% earned less than $108,750.
Does this include overtime or bonuses?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Is this the pay for a Shift Supervisor at a plant?
BLS measures this broader occupation across industries. It does not publish a separate wage for this manufacturing title. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.
How many people work in this occupation?
BLS estimated 673,430 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?
Manufacturing Headhunters evaluates the Shift Supervisor role through the First-Line Supervisors of Production and Operating Workers SOC category. The national median is $74,450 as of May 2025, compared to $71,190 in May 2024. National industrial data shows significant variance; Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing lists a median of $124,260, while Pulp, Paper, and Paperboard Mills reports a median of $97,080.
These findings demonstrate that Shift Supervisors in capital-intensive or hazardous sectors are compensated at higher levels compared to the overall average across all production environments.
The national P25 to P75 middle-band width is $33,050, with a range from $58,630 to $91,680. Regional hub data highlights the competitive nature of these roles; the Chicago median is $76,500, and the New York-Newark-Jersey City hub reports a median of $81,790. These numbers reflect base hourly or annual salary and do not include overtime pay, shift differentials, or annual bonuses. Because shift work often requires overtime and weekend rotations, the actual cash earnings for a supervisor can be significantly higher than the base annual median reported by the BLS.
Shift Supervisors are critical for operational handoffs, specifically in resolving defects and managing equipment during off-hours. They carry escalation authority and ensure that production flows correctly when site leadership is absent. This role is distinct from other management positions due to its direct, real-time presence on the floor. While the BLS category is broad, it provides a reliable baseline for shift-level supervision. Compensation will vary based on the specific technical requirements of the plant and the seniority of the supervisor, but these figures serve as an essential starting point for market rate analysis.
Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?
What is the difference in the national median between 2024 and 2025?
The national median increased from $71,190 in May 2024 to $74,450 in May 2025. This constitutes a $3,260 increase.
What is the P25 to P75 middle-band width for this role?
The middle-band width is $33,050, which is the range between the 25th percentile ($58,630) and the 75th percentile ($91,680).
Does the BLS data account for overtime or shift premiums?
No, the provided BLS figures are base cash wages. They exclude overtime pay and shift differentials, which are common and significant in manufacturing shift supervisory roles.
