The hiring decision
What matters for this job
Food plants run around the clock on washdown equipment, high-speed packaging and ammonia refrigeration. We recruit employed maintenance technicians who already keep sanitary lines running without contaminating the product.
We ask how the person protects motors and sensors in a wet room, which fasteners and lubricants they use near open product, and how they handle a repair so that debris never reaches food.
A cartoner or case packer that stops at speed costs the plant real throughput each minute. We screen for fault-finding on servo-driven machines, photoeyes, pneumatics and PLC alarms, and we ask how the candidate separates a mechanical jam from a controls fault. Experience with changeover format parts and guide rails matters as much as electrical skill.
Before an introduction
What we discuss with candidates
We talk with candidates about jobs they have done, why they are interested and whether the location and shift work for them. We tell you what they have shared and what still needs checking in your interviews.
Refrigeration awareness
Many food plants rely on ammonia systems. This avoids placing someone in a role their experience does not cover.
Electrical and safety discipline
Maintenance in a food plant means 480 volt panels, motor starters and variable frequency drives, often near water. We ask about NFPA 70E practice, arc flash labels, lockout steps and how the person verifies zero energy. We also ask how they communicate downtime to production so the supervisor hears the real cause.
Mechanical depth on rotating equipment
Pumps, gearboxes, conveyors and mixers are the daily load on a food plant technician. We ask how the person aligns a coupling, diagnoses a bearing from sound and heat, changes a seal on a sanitary pump and decides when a repair can wait for the weekend. These details show whether the technician repairs causes rather than symptoms.
Working with sanitation and production
Maintenance and sanitation share the same equipment, often at conflicting hours. We ask how the person hands equipment back after a repair, how they confirm tools and parts are not left behind, and how they work with operators who know the line better than anyone. Cooperation here protects food safety and keeps uptime reasonable.
Spare parts and planning
Downtime in a food plant often depends on whether the right gearbox or sensor is on the shelf. We ask how the person builds critical spares lists, tracks repeat failures in the work order system and argues for a repair that prevents the next call at three in the morning.

Where we find people
Food plant maintenance technicians are employed and well known to their peers. We find them through calls to technicians and leads at comparable bakeries, dairies, snack plants and protein facilities, and through packaging machinery service technicians who are tired of traveling. People at beverage and pharmaceutical plants also transfer well because they understand wet cleaning and documentation.
Technical college industrial maintenance graduates with a couple of years on a packaging line fit entry skilled jobs. Military maintenance veterans with electrical or mechanical ratings also appear, particularly those who have already adjusted to rotating shifts and weekend coverage.
Common hiring mistakes
- Sanitary equipment practice. Repairing a conveyor in a dry plant and repairing one that is hosed down nightly are different jobs.
- Sanitary equipment practice. Technicians who have worked in a food plant mention food-grade grease, lockout before sanitation, and tool control without prompting.
- Refrigeration awareness. A general maintenance technician is not asked to run the engine room unqualified, but we confirm what they have touched, what process safety training they hold, and whether they understand the difference between supporting refrigeration and working on it.

Questions about Industrial Maintenance Technician, Food Manufacturing searches
Do you recruit for the night maintenance shift?
Yes: We screen for people who already work nights or who have a household arrangement that makes overnight work practical. Repairing a conveyor in a dry plant and repairing one that is hosed down nightly are different jobs.
Can candidates work on ammonia systems?
Only where they hold the right training and experience. We tell you exactly what each person has done and what they have not.
Do you place sanitation staff for this role?
That is a separate search. We cover it on our sanitation technician pages and can run both together.
What if the plant is in a small town?
We discuss commute and relocation openly. Many strong candidates live within a reasonable drive of rural plants and do not need to move.
How is the search fee agreed?
The fee is a percentage of first-year base salary, agreed in writing before we start. There is no upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.

Questions employers ask
When do you pay a recruiting fee?
No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. We agree the fee basis and payment terms in writing before starting. Sending the form does not commit you to a search.
How long does it take to see a short list?
It depends on the job, location and people available. We discuss next steps after learning about your opening, rather than promising a date before we know the job.
How do you handle counteroffers?
We ask why candidates want to move and what could change their minds. We keep that conversation going through interviews and the offer.
What replacement terms apply?
We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.
What do you not do?
We do not supply high-volume general labor or bill hourly for a standard permanent search. Retainers are not the default. Any different arrangement must be agreed in writing.
