The hiring decision
What makes this hire work on your plant floor?
Black Belts who deliver savings the controller will sign off on.
Black Belt searches struggle with claims that cannot be tested. A resume may list projects with large savings, yet the plant controller never recognized the figure and the process drifted back after closure. Employers want a person who uses statistics to find real causes, designs experiments on live production, and brings finance into the project from the start. The hard part is separating someone who followed a template to a certificate from someone who solved a stubborn defect, such as variation in a molding process or a gauge that disagreed with itself, and then locked the gain with a control plan.
The method travels well, but data environments differ. Automotive and medical device plants have formal quality systems, measurement system analysis and process validation that give a Black Belt a structured home. A discrete assembly plant may have little data collected at all, so the early work is building measurement. A candidate from a mature, data-rich environment may find a lightly instrumented plant frustrating. We ask how they have worked when data was weak, and whether they can gain trust from engineers who doubt the approach.
Before an introduction
What do we check before you interview?
Our recruiter conversations establish what the candidate says they personally handled, how they made decisions and why they would consider this opening. The brief identifies candidate-reported information, available supporting evidence and unresolved questions. Your team still assesses technical performance, site-specific safety requirements and the authority the person will need.
Qualification in practice
A qualified Black Belt can walk through one project from charter to control plan. We ask for the defect or loss, the data collected, the analysis used, the cause found, the action taken and how the result held. We ask who in finance confirmed the savings and how it was recorded. Certification from a recognized body is common and worth confirming, along with the number of projects personally led rather than supported. We also ask about gauge studies and process capability, since they reveal whether the person truly works with data.
Savings the controller accepts
The most useful screening topic is how savings were validated. A project that reduced scrap should be traceable to material cost, labor and customer impact, and accepted by the plant controller. Savings claimed on avoided costs or soft benefits may be real but should be labelled as such. We ask candidates to explain which savings reached the income statement, which were cost avoidance, and what they did when a number was challenged. People who have lived this answer without defensiveness.
Statistics on a live line
Statistical rigor on paper is easy. On a live line it means convincing a production lead to run a designed experiment, holding settings while data accumulates and accepting an inconvenient answer. We ask about a time the data contradicted the engineering view and how the candidate handled it. We also ask about measurement systems, since a capable analyst checks the gauge before trusting the data. Candidates who can explain variation to an operator in plain words, and show the same result to an executive, are the ones who tend to get adoption and keep it after the project closes.
How we run the search
We begin by clarifying whether you need project execution, coaching of others or a leader of a program. We approach candidates in comparable industries and assess project depth through structured questioning, then request references from operations and finance. Owners get a summary of project scope, tools, verification of savings and concerns. For plants without strong data, we look harder for candidates who have built measurement from scratch, since those first months will define credibility.
Improvement within labor boundaries
In a union plant, a Black Belt must improve a process without assuming that job assignments or staffing rules can simply be rewritten. We ask how they involved operators, supervisors and labor representatives while keeping the analysis independent of a preferred staffing outcome.

Where are qualified people working now?
Black Belts work in larger manufacturers with formal improvement programs, in automotive suppliers, medical device and chemical plants, and in corporate quality or operations teams. Some are quality engineers or process engineers who earned the belt. Some moved from consulting. Some have become Master Black Belts and now coach others. A candidate who leads projects full time is different from one who carries belt duties alongside a line job, and the search should reflect which you need. Many have a degree in engineering or a technical field, though experience on the floor can matter as much.
Which hiring mistakes should you avoid?
- Responsibilities behind the title. Chemicals and process plants rely on continuous data and different statistical issues.
- Savings the controller accepts. They know finance partners and describe sign-off as part of the project, not an afterthought.
- How we run the search. A Black Belt and a Master Black Belt are different searches, and so is a quality engineer with a belt.
Executive-search discipline, on every assignment
What do you get from the Six-Step Search?
Plant leaders, engineers and skilled technicians receive the same care in defining the work, researching relevant backgrounds and understanding the individual. Pulling a list and sending messages is not the hard part. The value is doing the research and qualification well enough to support a sound hiring decision.
Calibrate the work and the decision
We start with the operating problem, what the hire must improve and the decisions they will own. We agree what experience matters, who supports the role and what you can realistically offer. A maintenance leader inheriting reactive breakdowns needs a different brief from one building a reliability program.
Research relevant plants and people
We research manufacturing environments where people have handled comparable work. Process, equipment and decision authority matter more than a matching title. We look for relevant professionals, including people who are not applying, rather than treating an exported list as a completed search.
Make respectful, targeted contact
We explain why the work may be relevant and invite a conversation without pressure. We agree what information may be shared on a confidential search. Contact is the start of qualification, not evidence that someone wants the job or fits it.
Discuss the work they personally performed
Our conversations separate an individual's decisions and responsibilities from the team's results. We explore judgment under pressure, reasons for considering a move and practical expectations. For technicians, that includes equipment background, shift, commute and the support available. Candidate accounts are identified as such; a conversation is not a technical certification.
Write down fit, gaps and open questions
You receive a written candidate brief connecting the person's background to your operating problem. It explains motivation and practical fit, the gaps we have identified and what remains to assess. We distinguish candidate-reported information from supporting evidence rather than presenting every statement as independently verified.
Stay involved through interviews and offers
We use your interview feedback to clarify gaps and keep both sides informed about the work and expectations. We help address offer questions, counteroffers and practical concerns without promising an acceptance. Your team makes the hiring decision and assesses technical capability and site-specific requirements. A shortlist is an output of this work, not the whole service.

What else affects this Lean Six Sigma Black Belt hire?
How do you check savings claims?
We ask how finance validated them, which were cost avoidance and which hit the income statement, and who can confirm. Black Belt searches struggle with claims that cannot be tested.
Is a Master Black Belt a different search?
Yes: That role coaches and manages a program, so we assess teaching and program leadership as well as project work. Black Belt searches struggle with claims that cannot be tested.
Can a Black Belt work in a plant with little data?
Yes, if they have built measurement before. We ask how they started and what they did first.
Do Black Belts move into operations?
Some do. If you want a future plant leader, we tell candidates and screen for operational interest.
How is the search fee agreed?
The fee is a percentage of first-year base salary, agreed in writing before we start. There is no upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.

What should we discuss first?
Is Black Belt certification required?
It is common, and we confirm the certifying body. We weigh it alongside the projects the person led themselves.
Questions before starting a search
When do you pay a recruiting fee?
No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. The signed recruiting agreement sets the fee basis and payment terms. Sending an opening does not itself commit you to a fee or an exclusive arrangement.
How long does it take to see a short list?
We discuss the search conditions before describing a realistic next step. Shift, location, equipment match and the candidate's reasons for moving all matter. We do not promise a shortlist date before understanding the opening.
How do you handle counteroffers?
We ask what is driving the move before introducing a candidate. We discuss what might change if the current employer offers more money or a different job. Your team still decides whether that person's motivation fits the opening.
What replacement terms apply?
We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.
What do you not do?
We do not bill hourly for a standard permanent search, repost a job-board ad as a search, or supply high-volume general labor. Retainers are not the default. Any different arrangement must be agreed in writing.
