What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?

For Chief Technology Officer (CTO), separate the guaranteed salary from any discretionary bonus or commission arrangement. OEWS measures straight-time gross wages, not pure base salary or total compensation. It includes base rate, guaranteed pay, commissions and production bonuses. It excludes overtime, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses and benefits.

An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure. Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.

Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.

What should you know about two BLS releases?

Chief Technology Officer (CTO) in the United States, annual wages, May 2024 and May 2025
Release period25thMedian75th
May 2024$134,930$167,740$207,210

These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.

What should you know about the actual remit?

Write down who is accountable for technical direction connecting product architecture with the business plan today. If responsibility for technical direction connecting product architecture with the business plan is divided between several people, tell us where this hire's work begins and ends.

That explanation helps separate their capability from a team's success at technical direction connecting product architecture with the business plan.

What should you know about questions?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

What is the median pay for a Chief Technology Officer (CTO)?

The median annual wage for Architectural and Engineering Managers in the United States was $171,270 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $139,360 and $212,500. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.

What does the 10th percentile mean here?

10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $120,810. 90% earned less than $262,760.

Does this include overtime or bonuses?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

Is this the pay for a Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at a plant?

Chief Technology Officer (CTO) is shown within the broader published occupation. BLS does not separate this plant-specific title, seniority, shift, process or credential. Compare the duties with the SOC definition before using the range. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.

What does this data mean for your opening?

Manufacturing Headhunters reviews the Chief Technology Officer role using the Architectural and Engineering Managers occupational mapping. S. national median for this group is $171,270 as of May 2025, which reflects a change of $3,530 from the May 2024 median of $167,740. The middle-band width is $73,140, derived from a P25 of $139,360 and a P75 of $212,500.

It is important to note that BLS does not isolate the CTO title, so these metrics represent the broader management cohort within the engineering sector.

In the highest employment hubs, the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim metro shows a median of $190,900, while the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn area sits at $168,550. The middle-band widths for these hubs are $65,730 and $65,280, respectively. These figures are higher than the national median, reflecting regional economic differences in engineering management. At the national level, specific industries such as Aerospace Product and Parts Manufacturing report medians reaching $192,800, with Semiconductor and Other Electronic Component Manufacturing at $183,950, and Computer and Electronic Product Manufacturing at $179,720.

For Chief Technology Officer (CTO) in the United States, releases are separate survey estimates. The May 2025 median is $171,270; the May 2024 median is $167,740. Their arithmetic difference is $3,530. They are not the same workers' raises and do not establish a pay trend or its cause. Hiring managers must exercise caution when using this data, as the BLS reporting mechanism does not adjust for the level of P&L responsibility or direct reports size common in executive-level manufacturing roles. For Chief Technology Officer (CTO) in the United States, OEWS measures straight-time gross wages, not pure base salary or total compensation. Commissions and production bonuses are included; overtime, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses and benefits are excluded.

Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?

The median reflects the broader Architectural and Engineering Manager category. For Chief Technology Officer (CTO) in the United States, OEWS measures straight-time gross wages, not pure base salary or total compensation. Commissions and production bonuses are included; overtime, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses and benefits are excluded.

Does the national median reflect actual CTO base salaries?

The median reflects the broader Architectural and Engineering Manager category. For Chief Technology Officer (CTO) in the United States, OEWS measures straight-time gross wages, not pure base salary or total compensation. Commissions and production bonuses are included; overtime, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses and benefits are excluded.

Why does the Detroit hub report lower median figures than Los Angeles?

Market medians depend on the local industry mix and concentration of management roles. Los Angeles reflects high-tech engineering concentrations which shift the reported median upward.

How should firms interpret the middle-band width?

The $73,140 width indicates a wide spectrum of experience and responsibilities within the management cohort. This range allows companies to calibrate salaries based on senior-level responsibilities.
