What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?

For NPI Manager, clarify the base pay before discussing call-outs, travel or extra shifts. OEWS measures straight-time gross wages, not pure base salary or total compensation. It includes base rate, guaranteed pay, commissions and production bonuses. It excludes overtime, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses and benefits.

An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure. Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.

Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.

What should you know about two BLS releases?

NPI Manager in the United States, annual wages, May 2024 and May 2025
Release period25thMedian75th
May 2024$134,930$167,740$207,210
May 2025$139,360$171,270$212,500

These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.

Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.

What should you know about the actual remit?

Write down who is accountable for launch decisions across engineering, production and customer requirements today. If responsibility for launch decisions across engineering, production and customer requirements is divided between several people, tell us where this hire's work begins and ends. That explanation helps separate their capability from a team's success at launch decisions across engineering, production and customer requirements.

What should you know about questions?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

What is the median pay for a NPI Manager?

The median annual wage for Architectural and Engineering Managers in the United States was $171,270 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $139,360 and $212,500. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.

What does the 10th percentile mean here?

10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $120,810. 90% earned less than $262,760.

Does this include overtime or bonuses?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

Is this the pay for a NPI Manager at a plant?

BLS measures this broader occupation across industries. It does not publish a separate wage for this manufacturing title. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.

How many people work in this occupation?

BLS estimated 220,260 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?

Manufacturing Headhunters interprets the New Product Introduction (NPI) manager role within the Architectural and Engineering Managers occupational group. The national median is $171,270, representing a $3,530 gain over the May 2024 reporting period. The middle band width for this occupation is $73,140, with a P25 of $139,360 and a P75 of $212,500.

These statistics represent the broader management classification and do not isolate NPI-specific compensation data.

Higher pay tiers are visible within sector-specific data. Aerospace Product and Parts Manufacturing reports a median of $192,800. Semiconductor manufacturing sits at $183,950, and general Computer and Electronic Product Manufacturing is $179,720. For NPI Manager in the United States, OEWS measures straight-time gross wages, not pure base salary or total compensation. Commissions and production bonuses are included; overtime, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses and benefits are excluded.

Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim reports a median of $190,900, while Detroit-Warren-Dearborn reflects $168,550. Detroit features a high location quotient of 3.43 for these roles, signifying a concentrated engineering management labor market compared to 1.08 in Los Angeles. These values represent the broad Architectural and Engineering Managers SOC code.

Screening candidates for an NPI manager role requires assessing their decisional impact. We prioritize individuals who have made difficult gate decisions that intentionally delayed a product release to prevent a production risk. This demonstrates deep accountability for the launch process itself, rather than someone whose experience is limited to only executing specific engineering tasks assigned by others.

Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?

How does BLS categorization impact NPI manager pay research?

Because there is no dedicated NPI manager category, the BLS lumps these managers in with other engineering managers. The data is broad and needs adjustment for specialized leadership responsibilities.

What is the implication of the middle band width of $73,140?

This wide range reflects the massive variation in seniority, industry, and budget oversight in the Architectural and Engineering Managers SOC. It confirms that the median is only a coarse starting point.

What do you look for in NPI manager candidates beyond technical skills?

We look for a demonstrated history of taking ownership for launch outcomes. This includes being able to justify delaying a launch for safety or quality reasons.
