The hiring decision
What matters for this job
Food Safety technicians run the checks that protect product and audits. We find working QA people from food plants who already do CCP monitoring and pre-op inspection.
A Food Safety or QA Technician monitors critical control points, inspects equipment before production, checks metal detectors, verifies temperatures and records everything. They also swab surfaces and run ATP tests. HACCP Technician and QA Technician (Food) are common alternate titles. We ask which tasks the person handled on their last shift.
A HACCP certificate shows training. We ask candidates to explain what they did when a critical limit was missed, how product was held and how records were closed. Experience under SQF or BRCGS audits matters, because the paperwork discipline differs from a casual plant.
Before an introduction
What we discuss with candidates
We talk with candidates about jobs they have done, why they are interested and whether the location and shift work for them. We tell you what they have shared and what still needs checking in your interviews.
Environmental monitoring
Swabbing programs find problems before product does. We ask how a candidate chose sample sites, how they responded to a positive result and how they communicated with sanitation. Weak candidates collect swabs. Strong ones follow up and verify corrective action.
Safe work and plant behavior
Technicians work around wet floors, cold rooms, chemicals and moving equipment. We ask about lockout awareness, chemical handling and personal protective gear. We also ask how they speak to an operator who skipped a hygiene step. Authority without hostility is the target.
Fit, shift, commute and current pay
Meat, dairy, bakery and beverage plants differ in hazards and records. We match product type first. Many food plants run early or overnight shifts, so we confirm shift tolerance, commute and relocation. We ask about current pay and the reasons for a move. Food science graduates may be ready for entry roles, and we tell you honestly how ready each person is.
Red flags when we screen a technician
Another is any history of signing records before the check was done. We also listen for discomfort with stopping production. We ask directly about the toughest hold they ever placed.
How we judge practical qualification
We ask the candidate to walk through a pre-operation inspection in their last plant. They name the equipment, the checks, the records and what they did when something failed. Then we ask how they verified the fix. Clear, ordered answers show habit. We also check basic comfort with data entry, since many programs are digital.
Fit versus title
A Food Safety Technician may spend the shift on the floor checking lines. A QA Technician may split time between the lab and the floor. A HACCP Technician may work mainly on records and verification. We separate these jobs during intake. We also ask whether the person will speak to auditors, because that changes the type of candidate who fits.
Practical qualification
A candidate is ready when they have monitored a critical control point on their own, taken action on a deviation and passed an audit with their records. We ask which part they handled. Candidates who only assisted may suit a junior role and we say so.
Do you cover swab and ATP programs?
Yes: We ask who selected sites, who read results and who followed up on a failure.

Direct search
Where we find people
We approach working QA staff at food and beverage plants and co-packers. They already live with audits and customer complaints.
Food science graduates are a smaller pool. We look for internships on production floors, because lab learning alone does not prepare someone for a cold, noisy line.
Quality staff from adjacent food categories, such as bakery moving to snack or dairy moving to beverage, can adapt well. We tell you which hazards are shared and which are new.
Common hiring mistakes
- HACCP and audit schemes. It does not show that someone can hold a line when a limit fails.
- Red flags when we screen a technician. A red flag is a person who describes checks as paperwork rather than protection.
- Red flags when we screen a technician. A technician who cannot hold product will not protect your audit or your customers.

What else affects this Food Safety / QA Technician hire?

Yes: Co-packers bring more product variety, and we screen for that. A Food Safety or QA Technician monitors critical control points, inspects equipment before production, checks metal detectors, verifies temperatures and records everything.
Can you find overnight QA staff?
Yes: We discuss shift before interviews. We approach working QA staff at food and beverage plants and co-packers.
Do you search for candidates with a specific audit scheme?
Yes: We ask about the scheme your customers require and search for people who have lived under it. A candidate is ready when they have monitored a critical control point on their own, taken action on a deviation and passed an audit with their records.
Can a lab technician move into a floor QA role?
Sometimes: The pace and hygiene demands differ, and we tell you honestly where we see risk. We look for internships on production floors, because lab learning alone does not prepare someone for a cold, noisy line.

Questions employers ask
When do you pay a recruiting fee?
No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. We agree the fee basis and payment terms in writing before starting. Sending the form does not commit you to a search.
How long does it take to see a short list?
It depends on the job, location and people available. We discuss next steps after learning about your opening, rather than promising a date before we know the job.
How do you handle counteroffers?
We ask why candidates want to move and what could change their minds. We keep that conversation going through interviews and the offer.
What replacement terms apply?
We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.
What do you not do?
We do not supply high-volume general labor or bill hourly for a standard permanent search. Retainers are not the default. Any different arrangement must be agreed in writing.
