Senior CNC Machinist pay, United States

Manufacturing Headhunters uses the published BLS OEWS figures below. They describe the mapped occupation and area, not an individual offer.

This is what we do all day: recruit manufacturing professionals.

The median annual wage for Machinists in the United States was $58,750 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $47,570 and $67,700.

What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?

For Senior CNC Machinist, write the straight-time rate separately from shift coverage and extra hours. OEWS measures straight-time gross wages, not pure base salary or total compensation. It includes base rate, guaranteed pay, commissions and production bonuses. It excludes overtime, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses and benefits.

An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure. Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.

Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.

What should you know about two BLS releases?

Senior CNC Machinist in the United States, annual wages, May 2024 and May 2025
Release period25thMedian75th
May 2024$46,250$56,150$64,910
May 2025$47,570$58,750$67,700

These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.

What should you know about supervisory and worker occupations?

BLS publishes these as separate occupations. Pay for one is not a pay step for the other.

Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.

What should you know about the decision behind the experience?

The useful evidence is a machining problem solved through tooling, offsets and measurement, not a list of equipment or projects. Discuss what information was available during a machining problem solved through tooling, offsets and measurement. A clear explanation exposes senior technical capability rather than assumed crew-management authority much better than asking whether the candidate has held the title before.

What should you know about questions?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

What is the median pay for a Senior CNC Machinist?

The median annual wage for Machinists in the United States was $58,750 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $47,570 and $67,700. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.

What does the 10th percentile mean here?

10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $39,200. 90% earned less than $80,010.

Does this include overtime or bonuses?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

Is this the pay for a Senior CNC Machinist at a plant?

Senior CNC Machinist is shown within the broader published occupation. BLS does not separate this plant-specific title, seniority, shift, process or credential. Compare the duties with the SOC definition before using the range. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.

How many people work in this occupation?

BLS estimated 287,050 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?

The Senior CNC Machinist role is analyzed here within the SOC 51-4041 Machinists occupation. For Senior CNC Machinist in the United States, releases are separate survey estimates. The May 2025 median is $58,750; the May 2024 median is $56,150. Their arithmetic difference is $2,600.

They are not the same workers' raises and do not establish a pay trend or its cause. For Senior CNC Machinist in the United States, OEWS measures straight-time gross wages, not pure base salary or total compensation. Commissions and production bonuses are included; overtime, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses and benefits are excluded.

BLS data does not differentiate roles based on seniority, machine type, or technical complexity. Industry medians, such as $108,490 for Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing and $88,750 for Beverage and Tobacco Product Manufacturing, serve as national-level context rather than specific role benchmarks. Hiring managers should avoid assigning too much weight to broad SOC data when recruiting for senior CNC talent. Instead, base your search and evaluation on a candidate’s documented capability to solve complex tooling problems and manage precision offsets, as these are better indicators of senior-level fit than broad occupational wages.

Comparison across primary employment metros shows distinct pay profiles. Chicago-Naperville-Elgin shows a median of $59,520 and a $20,490 middle-band width. Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington shows a median of $62,070 and a $24,440 middle-band width. These metros hold high concentrations of machining labor, as reflected in their occupational employment counts. High location quotients demonstrate the importance of these regions to the trade but do not define the specific pay needed to secure senior CNC expertise. When setting a salary, use these medians as a guide, but account for the specific technical problem-solving required by your CNC environment to ensure you offer a competitive wage for your region.

Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?

Are these wage figures for Senior CNC Machinists or all machinists?

The figures belong to the broader SOC 51-4041 Machinists occupation. This includes all levels of machining, so they serve only as a general market reference.

How do I account for the seniority level in my offer?

You must use your own shop-floor technical assessment to define 'senior' for your specific needs. Use the middle-band width as an indication of the potential range to build your offer around.

What is the importance of the industry medians?

Industry medians illustrate the variation in pay across different manufacturing sectors. They help you gauge where your company's sector stands on a national level compared to others.
