What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?
For Director of Procurement, separate the guaranteed salary from any discretionary bonus or commission arrangement. OEWS measures straight-time gross wages, not pure base salary or total compensation. It includes base rate, guaranteed pay, commissions and production bonuses. It excludes overtime, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses and benefits.
An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure. Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.
Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.
What should you know about two BLS releases?
| Release period | 25th | Median | 75th |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 2024 | $107,430 | $139,510 | $175,460 |
| May 2025 | $115,550 | $148,080 | $182,270 |
These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.
Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.
What should you know about a move that can hold up?
Someone working in procurement directors with direct-materials and manufacturing supplier responsibility needs a clear reason to leave. Explain how your opening changes their responsibility for procurement leaders and purchasing governance for manufacturing spend. If the answer depends on authority over procurement leaders and purchasing governance for manufacturing spend that you cannot offer, that mismatch belongs in the conversation before an offer.
What should you know about questions?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.
What is the median pay for a Director of Procurement?
The median annual wage for Purchasing Managers in the United States was $148,080 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $115,550 and $182,270. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.
What does the 10th percentile mean here?
10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $92,490. 90% earned less than $223,280.
Does this include overtime or bonuses?
Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Is this the pay for a Director of Procurement at a plant?
BLS measures this broader occupation across industries. It does not publish a separate wage for this manufacturing title. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.
How many people work in this occupation?
BLS estimated 84,320 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?
The Director of Procurement role falls within the broader SOC 11-3061 Purchasing Managers classification. BLS data captures this as an aggregate, lacking a separate category for manufacturing-specific procurement directors. For Director of Procurement in the United States, releases are separate survey estimates. The May 2025 median is $148,080; the May 2024 median is $139,510. Their arithmetic difference is $8,570.
They are not the same workers' raises and do not establish a pay trend or its cause. For Director of Procurement in the United States, OEWS measures straight-time gross wages, not pure base salary or total compensation. Commissions and production bonuses are included; overtime, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses and benefits are excluded. Effective directors in this space are evaluated on their ability to manage complex sourcing tradeoffs between supply continuity and commercial terms, rather than daily purchasing.
With a P25 to P75 middle band width of $66,720, the compensation for purchasing managers varies based on the scope and organizational impact. The two metros with the highest occupation employment are New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ, with a median of $171,810, and Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV, with a median of $172,150. Location quotients of 1.43 and 2.46 show high occupational concentration in these regions. These metrics demonstrate where the workforce is clustered, which does not necessarily define the pay expectations for an experienced manufacturing procurement leader.
National industry-specific rows provide valuable context for manufacturing sectors. Computer and Peripheral Equipment Manufacturing lists a median of $178,520, while Engine, Turbine, and Power Transmission Equipment Manufacturing reports $171,300. Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing follows with $171,000. These figures are exclusively national and reflect higher pay bands than the overall occupation median. The BLS does not distinguish between a procurement manager for a single site and a director managing global commodities. Consequently, hiring managers should use the upper percentiles and industry-specific medians when scoping a director-level mandate.
Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?
Why does the industry median differ from the occupation median?
Industry medians represent specialized sectors where procurement often requires deeper technical and commodity expertise. The $178,520 median for computer equipment is national and specific to that industry classification.
How should managers interpret the P90 figures?
The P90 national figure of $223,280 represents the upper tier of purchasing management within the broad SOC code. This level likely corresponds to director-level positions with broad strategic scope.
Do these figures include benefits?
For Director of Procurement in the United States, OEWS measures straight-time gross wages, not pure base salary or total compensation. Commissions and production bonuses are included; overtime, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses and benefits are excluded.
