What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?

For S&OP Manager, separate the guaranteed salary from any discretionary bonus or commission arrangement. OEWS measures straight-time gross wages, not pure base salary or total compensation. It includes base rate, guaranteed pay, commissions and production bonuses. It excludes overtime, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses and benefits.

An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure. Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.

Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.

What should you know about two BLS releases?

S&OP Manager in the United States, annual wages, May 2024 and May 2025
Release period25thMedian75th
May 2024$100,010$136,550$179,190
May 2025$102,880$141,900$186,300

These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.

Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.

What should you know about influence without authority?

S&OP managers have no direct power over sales, finance or production. We ask how they got a commercial leader to commit to a number and how they handled a scenario that required cutting a customer's order. The people we hire describe negotiation with data, not escalation by email.

We also ask how they documented assumptions so the same debate did not repeat each month, and how they reported the gap between the commercial plan and the operating plan to the leadership team. A number that nobody owns is not a plan. We also ask what the planning calendar looked like in a month with a plant shutdown, a supplier failure or a customer cancellation, and whether the executive team accepted a changed plan or reverted to wishful numbers.

What should you know about questions?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. What does this data mean for your opening?

S&OP Managers are categorized under the broad SOC 11-9199, Managers, All Other. This classification lacks the specificity to isolate S&OP-focused roles, which Manufacturing Headhunters identifies as requiring distinct skills in forecast accuracy, S&OP cadence, and advanced planning tools. Industry data shows significantly higher pay in sectors such as Navigational, Measuring, Electromedical, and Control Instruments Manufacturing, which reports a $202,090 median.

This is substantially higher than the national median of $141,900 for the broader category. The middle-band width is $83,420, derived from a P25 of $102,880 and a P75 of $186,300.

Regional figures show higher median pay in Washington-Arlington-Alexandria at $170,980 and New York-Newark-Jersey City at $169,800. For S&OP Manager in the United States, releases are separate survey estimates. The May 2025 median is $141,900; the May 2024 median is $136,550. Their arithmetic difference is $5,350. They are not the same workers' raises and do not establish a pay trend or its cause. For S&OP Manager in the United States, OEWS measures straight-time gross wages, not pure base salary or total compensation. Commissions and production bonuses are included; overtime, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses and benefits are excluded. Clients must adjust expectations based on the level of technical complexity involved in their specific forecast modeling and cycle processes.

Given that SOC 11-9199 includes many unrelated management titles, relying on the national median may not reflect the market rate for a specialized S&OP Manager. High-level forecasting and supply-demand balancing roles often cluster toward the upper quartiles. Location quotients, such as 3.35 in Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, suggest a high concentration of management occupations but do not dictate pay. For manufacturing, where S&OP is critical for balancing production capacity, pay often aligns closer to the industry-specific manufacturing medians provided rather than the broad SOC national median.

Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?

The $141,900 national median is an average for all types of managers in that SOC. For S&OP Manager in the United States, percentiles describe the wage distribution of the mapped occupation. The published middle interval is $102,880 to $186,300 annually.

Why is the industry-specific median higher than the national median?

The $141,900 national median is an average for all types of managers in that SOC. For S&OP Manager in the United States, percentiles describe the wage distribution of the mapped occupation. The published middle interval is $102,880 to $186,300 annually. They do not assign pay to plant size, seniority, credentials or job complexity. Assess duties and candidate requirements separately; these rows do not measure a premium for them.

What is the significance of the $83,420 middle-band width?

The wide band between $102,880 and $186,300 indicates the large variety of management positions included in this code. S&OP Manager roles generally fall toward the higher end of this spread.

How do recent median changes impact the current market?

For S&OP Manager in the United States, releases are separate survey estimates. The May 2025 median is $141,900; the May 2024 median is $136,550. Their arithmetic difference is $5,350. They are not the same workers' raises and do not establish a pay trend or its cause.
