What should you know about manufacturing pay mix?

For Utilities / Energy Manager, clarify the base pay before discussing call-outs, travel or extra shifts. OEWS measures straight-time gross wages, not pure base salary or total compensation. It includes base rate, guaranteed pay, commissions and production bonuses. It excludes overtime, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses and benefits.

An attendance bonus is not a production bonus; confirm its purpose and treatment rather than adding every bonus to the BLS figure. Skills-based pay steps affect the base rate when they are part of straight-time pay; BLS does not publish a separate rate for each plant's skill grade. Ask whether a tool allowance is expense reimbursement or wage pay. OEWS does not publish a separate tool-allowance component. Keep these items separate in the offer so the published wage is not mistaken for the whole package.

Pay mix here means how published medians for this one BLS occupation differ across manufacturing industries and against the all-industry median. It does not split pay into base, incentive or overtime. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses.

What should you know about two BLS releases?

Utilities / Energy Manager in the United States, annual wages, May 2024 and May 2025
Release period25thMedian75th
May 2024$80,150$104,690$135,650
May 2025$82,020$106,660$138,870

These are two separate BLS estimates from different survey panels. The workers and employers behind them differ, so the gap is not like-for-like pay for the same workers and is not a growth rate. We show no percentage change.

Recruiter's read. Qualitative, not BLS data.

What should you know about the decision behind the experience?

The useful evidence is an operating change separating energy savings from reduced production demand, not a list of equipment or projects. A clear explanation exposes utility operations and supply risk rather than unsupported savings claims much better than asking whether the candidate has held the title before.

What should you know about questions?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

What is the median pay for a Utilities / Energy Manager?

The median annual wage for Facilities Managers in the United States was $106,660 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025). The middle half of workers earned between $82,020 and $138,870. This is the broader occupation BLS publishes, not a figure for this exact title.

What does the 10th percentile mean here?

10% of workers in this occupation and area earned less than $64,480. 90% earned less than $176,120.

Does this include overtime or bonuses?

Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay. Base rate; cost-of-living allowances; guaranteed pay; hazardous-duty pay; incentive pay, including commissions and production bonuses; and tips are included. Excluded are overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, employer cost for supplementary benefits, and tuition reimbursements.

Is this the pay for a Utilities / Energy Manager at a plant?

BLS measures this broader occupation across industries. It does not publish a separate wage for this manufacturing title. These are occupation estimates across all industries, not an offer for a particular manufacturing title.

How many people work in this occupation?

BLS estimated 156,180 workers employed in this occupation in the United States.

What does this data mean for your opening?

For Utilities / Energy Manager in the United States, releases are separate survey estimates. The May 2025 median is $106,660; the May 2024 median is $104,690. Their arithmetic difference is $1,970. They are not the same workers' raises and do not establish a pay trend or its cause.

This broad grouping reflects general facility management and does not specifically isolate energy management as a distinct manufacturing engineering discipline. The middle band width is $56,850, stretching between a P25 of $82,020 and a P75 of $138,870.

National industry comparisons emphasize the sector differences in compensation. The Iron and Steel Mills and Ferroalloy Manufacturing industry lists a median of $200,600, and the Aerospace Product and Parts Manufacturing sector reports $157,460. For Utilities / Energy Manager in the United States, OEWS measures straight-time gross wages, not pure base salary or total compensation. Commissions and production bonuses are included; overtime, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses and benefits are excluded. These benefits are key non-monetary components of a total compensation package that the BLS does not capture.

Regional market analysis underscores the variance in pay. The New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ metro reports a median of $134,010 and a middle band width of $68,190. The Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, IL-IN metro lists a median of $113,150 and a middle band width of $49,380. Location quotients of 1.07 and 1.50 for these areas confirm a high demand for facilities leadership. For Utilities / Energy Manager in the United States, percentiles describe the wage distribution of the mapped occupation. The published middle interval is $82,020 to $138,870 annually. They do not assign pay to plant size, seniority, credentials or job complexity. Assess duties and candidate requirements separately; these rows do not measure a premium for them.

Which pay questions should you settle before hiring?

Is the $106,660 national median for Facilities Managers low for this role?

Yes, because the SOC 11-3013 captures general building management. Manufacturing-specific energy management requires higher technical skill and should be benchmarked against the higher-end industry-specific data provided.

What is the importance of the industry-specific medians?

The $200,600 and $157,460 industry-specific medians represent the competitive pay in sectors where utility and energy management directly impact plant profitability. These are better guides than the general occupational median.

How does the location quotient affect my hiring strategy?

A higher location quotient, such as the 1.50 in Chicago, means there is more competition for energy and facility talent. You should expect higher local wage pressure in these concentrated hubs.
